Perks of becoming an adult

18 Things You Can Do At 18

Turning 18 is a milestone in life. You become a legal adult and you have privileges that you did not have at 17. You gain more responsibilities and respect. You also are getting ready to go to college, where you would be on your own and you have to figure out how to live independently.

1. Ordering stuff from TV.

As a kid, I wanted to buy all the cool gadgets advertised on TV, but I was always too young. Now I can, and you can too. You can order all the wacky contraptions and toys you want.

2. Get married.

When you turn 18, you can legally get married and it will be recognized by the government.

3. Become a bartender.

Go at it and head to bar tending school because once you turn 18, the counter is all yours.

4. Go skydiving.

Get on your parachute and get ready to jump. Once you turn 18, feel free to jump out of a plane (safely with a parachute and a professional guide)!

5. Vote.

Go cast your vote. 18 is the minimum age at which someone needs to be to vote in local and national elections. Make sure your voice is heard.

6.Go to adult jail.

At this age, you need to be careful. If you get in trouble with the law, there is a chance you will be sent to jail, and you are too old for juvie. The adult jail is a lot more intense that juvie, so I would avoid that place at all costs.

7. Buy cigarettes.

18 year olds are allowed to walk right into Walmart and buy as many packs as they want (though I do not recommend it for health purposes).

8. Buy lottery tickets.

Are you ready to become rich quick? Because once you are 18, now is your chance. Go and get tons of lottery tickets and try to win some money.

9. Get a tattoo.

Brace yourself for the needle that will permanently mark your skin forever because at the age of 18, tattoos are fair game.

10. Book a hotel room.

You can now, technically, travel alone because you can book a hotel room. So grab some cash and have a nice relaxing night in a fancy hotel.

11. Go bungee jumping.

Are you an adventure seeker? Because once you turn 18, not only can you go sky diving, but you can also go bungee jumping to get the adrenaline rush you want.

12. Go to a nightclub.

Go experience the night life that celebrities are always seen partying at. But don't get too excited because most clubs will make sure there is a way to identify you as under 21 -- no drinking.

13. Buy fireworks.

Get ready for the 4th of July because now you can be the center of attention, manning the firework show. Just be careful because they can be dangerous.

14. Jury duty.

Go get your mail, and check for a letter requesting you for jury duty because at 18, you can be picked to serve on the jury of your local court.

15. Sue someone -- or be sued.

If someone does something that is illegal or they scammed you, feel free to take the high road and sue the pants off of them. But be careful because someone can sue you too.

16. Change your name.

If you really hate your name or you are trying to get off the grid, feel free to change your name. But be warned that it is a long process and really think about it before you act.

17. Join the military.

At 18, you can legally enlist in the military and have the most noble profession out there; protecting your country.

18. Drink Up Abroad

18 is the drinking age in many countries in Europe and abroad so feel free to travel and taste all the different flavors from around the world!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
