America was built on small towns. I was blessed with being from a small town. Compared to people from big towns and cities, you grow up different and learn different ways of life. Small towns aren't for everyone, but they are special, and no one can argue against it. If you are from a little small country town like mine, you'll understand these struggles and advantages of small town living.
1. Football is king.
You know you will always have plans on Friday night from August-November.
2. You have to travel to another town to go the mall.
My closest mall is 30 minutes away. In another county.
3. There is at least one hot spot parking lot everyone congregates in.
*cough* Walmart *cough*
4. E.K.E.
Or Everyone Knows Everyone. Or at least your momma knows them.
5. Bonfires are literally lit.
Because nothing better to do on Saturday then breathing in smoke and standing around a fire chatting.
6. "So you're from *insert town*, right? Do you know Mindy?" "Yes, of course."
You went to school with Mindy since pre-school. And you played basketball together. And she dates one of your best friends. And you live in the neighborhood over. So, yeah, I guess you do know her.
7. Tractors + one lane roads = your worst nightmare
Not even a slight exaggeration.
8. Dating can be hard.
You know too much about a person or they dated someone close to you previously. Also, see #4. and #6.
9. What is traffic?
Besides #7, this will never occur. Going to a big city can be overwhelming.
10. You always run into at least one person you know. Or four.
Goes out to grocery store, looks nice, sees no one. Goes out in sweatpants, sees whole fellow graduating class.
11. Your favorite restaurant knows your name, order, and your momma.
Unsweet tea, and never even have to mention that I want lemon, two Equals, and two Sweet n Lows.
13. Nothing is open past 10 p.m.
If you're hungry, you only got McDonald's. Sorry bout it.
14. You will never get lost.
I could drive to the other side of town with my eyes closed. Not literally, but you know what I meant.
15. Cruising down Main Street was a past time.
Some of my happiest memories of high school were made doing this.
16. Word travels fast.
That's why you don't do anything stupid (or at least don't tell anyone about it) because literally everyone will find out about it.
17. You definitely have never heard of my town.
When you have to explain where you are from, just say the closest big city near you.
I may not always live in my small town, or any small town at all, but I will always cherish the fact that is where I grew up. It made me who I am. No matter where I go, this small hometown of mine will always be a part of me.
