Okay people let's talk business: 2016 has not been that bad. Although we've had a controversial election, the loss of a beloved gorilla, and the shutdown of Vine, people need to stop overlooking the amazing things that have happened this year.

1. The Ice Bucket Challenge led to a breakthrough.

One million dollars was donated to University of Massachusetts Medical School Project that was able to identify the gene NEK1, that was able to identify a gene that is responsible for the degenerative disease ALS.

2. U.S Army now offers maternity leave.

A new maternity leave-policy that gives female service members 12 weeks paid time off after having a child.

3. Giant Pandas are no longer endangered.

There are now 2,060 giant pandas in the wild, leading the species being upgraded from endangered to “vulnerable”.

4. Six women made history on election night.

Kamala Harris became only the second black woman to be elected to the Senate. Catherine Cortez Masto made history last night by becoming the first Latina woman senator in U.S. history. In Washington State, Pramila Jaypal became the first South Asian woman to be elected to Congress. After being elected Minnesota State Representative, Ilhan Omar made history as the first Somali-American legislator. In Oregan, Kate Brown was elected the first openly LGBTQ+ governor in the U.S. Tammy Duckworth is a biracial double-amputee who defeated Republican Mark Kirk to become the senator for Illinois.

5. NASA's Juno Spacecraft reached Jupiter.

After a 1.7-billion-mile, five-year journey, NASA’s Juno spacecraft entered Jupiter’s orbit. Its mission is to perform an in-depth study of the planet over the course of 20 months.

6. A Hijab was featured at New York Fashion Week.

A collection presented at New York Fashion Week is the first time every model walked the event's runway wearing a hijab by Muslim designer Anniesa Hasibuan.

7. Harriet Tubman will boot Andrew Jackson from the face of the twenty dollar bill.

After months of debate and controversy over how to incorporate a woman's portrait onto the $10 bill, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew announced plans to redesign the $10, $20 and $5 bill. All three denominations will have a female presence.

8. The Dakota Access Pipeline is to be rerouted.

The Dakota Access Pipeline will not cross under Lake Oahe in North Dakota. A victory for the Standing Rock Sioux tribe and its supporters, who argued the project would threaten the tribe's water source and cultural sites.

9. The Gilmore Girls Reunion came out!

The show left broadcast television in 2007 after seven seasons. The drama returned to Netflix as “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life.”

10. The Women Gymnastics Team wins the gold.

The U.S. women's gymnastics team has won gold at the 2016 Olympic Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.

11. Volunteers in India planted 50 million trees within 24 hours.

In the agreement, signed on Earth Day 2016, India agreed to spend almost £5 billion to reforest 12 per cent of its land – bringing total forest cover to 235 million acres by 2030.

12. A plane flew around the world without using fuel.

The first round-the-world flight by a solar-powered plane was completed in Abu Dhabi. It has 17,000 solar cells on its wings and used no fossil fuel. It spent more than 23 days in the air.

13. The movement of prosthetic limbs by thought happened in the field of medicine.

Physicians and biomedical engineers from Johns Hopkins report what they believe is the first successful effort to wiggle fingers individually and independently of each other using a mind-controlled artificial “arm” to control the movement.

14. There are coffee consumption benefits!

Coffee consumption has been proved to help curtail cancer and suicide rates.

15. The Orlando Angels protest happened.

Counter-protestors dressed as angels shielded mourners from anti-gay protesters near the funeral service in Orlando, Florida, for Christopher Andrew Leinonen, one of the victims of the Pulse nightclub shootings.

AND FINALLY.....

16. Leonardo DiCaprio wins an Oscar!

The moment we have all been waiting for: Leonardo DiCaprio finally won an Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in The Revenant.

Although this year was no walk in the park, and many of us may have felt like we may reach Kanye's level of insanity, we should at least be able to agree that it could have been worse.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.
