15 sure fire ways to cure writer's block

In This Article:

Every writer from time to time finds themselves in a bit of a rut. With no inspiration and a looming deadline there's not always a lot of room for writer's block. When I get stuck there's a multitude of methods I use to try and figure out an idea or two, whether that be for an article or in figuring out storylines. Below are just a few of my favorite methods.

1. Read a book

Giphy

Getting lost in someone else's work sometimes leads to an inspiration of your own.

2. Workout

Giphy

There's no better way to get your mind active with ideas than to get your entire body in action. Usually, I go for a run, but sometimes I'll settle with the elliptical because North Carolina summers are no joke.

3. Go exploring

Giphy

Crazy, random adventures always lead to the best stories, so let them help you discover some new ideas.

4. Go on a nature walk

Giphy

When I'm in nature I'm in my happy place. It's so peaceful and relaxing that I'm able to open my mind and think clearly. Also, it's beautiful and inspiring in and of itself.

5. Sit outside and just listen

Fresh air does wonders for a brain that seems to be unresponsive to new ideas.

6. Daydream

Giphy

Don't lie; we all daydream! So next time you're bored or need to check out from reality, go to LaLa Land and find some new ideas.

7. Go grab a coffee

Caffeine does wonders for getting the creative juices flowing. If you prefer, tea does just as well if not better.

8. Look through old pictures

Take a look down memory lane; childhood memories sometimes lead to some rather interesting stories. Although, I'm sure not everyone wants to tell those.

9. Write without thinking

Giphy

My high school English teachers taught me this one. Just write and get everything out without thinking or changing anything. Your mind has a lot of thoughts going on in there whether or not you believe it.

10. Call a friend

Giphy

Sometimes all you need is an hour-long conversation with your best friend to get those gears turning.

11. Watch a movie

Giphy

As with books, sometimes getting lost in a different world can help inspire you to tell your own story. Or you could just write a review on the movie and call it a day!

12. Read the news

While I don't do this often, there's a lot of crazy stuff going on in the world, some of which is story worthy. Give it a chance, even it does seem a little dull at first.

13. Cook

Giphy

Nothing like an excellent batch of cookies or a stellar pasta dish to get the mind flowing.

14. Meditate

Relaxing the mind and body can help you get re-balanced and refocused. Trust me, sometimes all it takes is a good session of yoga or a little nap to find what inspires you.

15. Have a dance party

Giphy

If all else fails, let loose and dance like there's no tomorrow! Great music and great friends are all you really need for a fun, eventful night anyways.

For writers, there will always be days when there's no motivation to write or no ideas for what to write at all, and that's okay. Give it time and don't just sit around like a bump on a log hoping inspiration will hit you in the face. Go out and create your own inspiration!

The infamous RBF is something I have and am known for. It’s kind of exhausting to be asked if you're okay all the time or being told to smile more. Girls with RBF get judged to be mean and rude much quicker than the girl who is always smiling. It’s true and just plain natural for someone who is generally smiling all the time to come off as more trustworthy and I've gotten used to it. I used to think that having a Resting Bitch Face was only a bad thing until I realized that just like anything else, it also has its perks. Having a permafrown with a piercing look comes with great power.

We all know that Parks and Recreation is one of the greatest shows ever to air on TV. As we watched every episode, we all found a piece of us in each character (even Jerry). If I have learned one thing in my lifetime, it is that friends are a privilege. No one is required to give you their company and yet there is some sort of shared connection that keeps you together. And from that friendship, you may even find yourself lucky enough to have a few more friends, thus forming a group. Here are just a few signs that prove your current friend group is the ultimate friend group.
