It's perfectly acceptable to take time to unwind and relax after a stressful semester as a college student. After New Year's, you may find yourself wondering what you should do with the extra time on your hands. While it's important to have fun during your time off from heavy course loads and hectic schedules, winter break is the perfect time to be productive as an adult and student about to start a new semester. Here are 15 productive things you can do:
1. Work
Make some extra cash during your time off working at a part-time or seasonal job. It'll keep you occupied and help you pay for future expenses as well.
2. Update your resume
Did you learn a new skill in one of your classes? Gain any experience at a job or internship? Put it on your resume. Add relevant coursework and update your grade point average as well.
3. Apply for scholarships
Use extra time you have to work on scholarship applications so you can potentially receive financial support for your education.
4. Research grad schools or career interests
If you're thinking of pursuing grad school, winter break is the perfect time to start looking at programs and seeing which one is best for you. If not, research careers you're interested in to get a sense of what they're all about.
5. Earn some class credit
Get ahead in your studies and take a class through your university. You'll learn something and save yourself from cramming course into your schedule senior year.
6. Clean your living space
Break out your duster, broom, vacuum, mop, disinfecting wipes, or whatever you need to clean up your space and get rid of germs. Put on a playlist to make it fun.
7. Search and apply for internships or full-time jobs
An internship is the perfect opportunity to gain some experience and learn about your potential career interests. If you're about to graduate, start applying for jobs before spring classes overwhelm you with work.
8. Exercise
Get yourself to the gym to work up a sweat. It'll keep you busy, improve your health, and help reduce any lingering stress.
9. Volunteer
Do some good for others and yourself as a volunteer. See if you can lend a helping hand at a non-profit organization, church, or other program in your community.
10. Declutter and organize
A cluttered life is a cluttered mind. Go through your closet, gather clothes you don't like or fit in, and donate them. Organize your messy desk drawers. Clear out the things you no longer need and find places for the stuff you do have.
11. Schedule necessary appointments
Make any appointments you were unable to go to during classes. Get the oil changed in your car, check on your health at the doctor's office, or tend to whatever needs attention.
12. Read for leisure
Since you have a break from textbooks and class materials, pick up something you actually want to read. Try reading a series, classic novel, or new genre.
13. Evaluate your finances
See how your bank account fared after paying tuition and spending during the holiday season. From there, you can make a budget and plan how to use or save your money.
14. Learn a new skill
It can be anything from learning how to use a new computer program to cooking a meal. Add to your growing skill set by experimenting. You'll expand your horizons along the way.
15. Prep for next semester
If you're really bored, go through previous class notes and start getting ready for upcoming classes. It doesn't hurt to refresh and get ahead of the game.
