OK, let's be honest, we're all going to make over a billion New Year's resolutions this year that won't live to see February. We're all super guilty of setting goals at the beginning of the year and then dropping them relatively quickly because we just don't have time. However, setting aside time to revolutionize the way you take care of yourself is super important to looking great and feeling like you can conquer the world! If you make time for these simple, game-changing resolutions, your body will be thanking you in no time!
1. Drink a glass of water when you wake up.
If you're anything like me, the idea of crawling out of your bed in the morning is about as appealing as the prospect of diving out of a plane without a parachute. A simple way to get your body moving and really shake off sleep in the morning is to down a cold glass of water! Not only does cold water in the morning get your metabolism working, but it also keeps you hydrated after your body has dehydrated with sleep.
2. Remove your makeup before you go to sleep.
Yeah, OK, removing the eyebrows that you spent twenty minutes drawing on that morning doesn't sound exactly appealing, but trust me, your skin will thank you. When you sleep, your pores are blasting wide open, and the last thing you want is for the bacteria on your makeup to sneak in while you're unaware. By making sure that your face is bare before you sleep, you're helping future you out.
3. Drink more green tea.
Green tea is seriously the cure all for anything. You're sick? Drink green tea. You want to boast your metabolism? Drink green tea. You want some natural caffeine that's good for you? Drink green tea. You want smooth skin with a healthy glow? Drink green tea. The best part is that when you're done with your tea, you can take the used tea leaves, mix them with honey and make a pretty stellar face mask!
4. Protect yourself before you wreck yourself,
If you haven't invested in a good SPF, then you should really think about it. Let's face it, the SPF that comes in most moisturizers and foundations just isn't enough protection against harmful UV rays that cause wrinkles and wear at your skin. Spending the extra minute or two that it takes to apply SPF before you start your usual makeup routine is a great habit to start in 2016.
5. Go to a fitness class for fun.
If you're guilty of wanting to lose weight at the start of every new year, raise your hand. Well, cut that out! Stop thinking about the numbers and sign up for an interesting fitness class because it sounds fun, not because you want to shed a few pounds. Working out is only ever worth it if you're having fun, too. Get out of the monotony of the gym and take a cool class like pole fitness or Zumba!
6. Sit up straight.
In a world that seems to grow increasingly more dependent on computers, reminding ourselves to sit up straight at our desks is becoming more and more crucial. By consciously reminding yourself to sit up straight with your shoulders back, you're saving yourself for a lot of tension and back pain that would otherwise only lead to increased stress.
7. Clean your phone.
If you haven't cleaned your phone in a while, you might want to consider the amount of bacteria that finds its way to your touchscreen everyday. Cellphones usually carry more bacteria than a public restroom! Do your skin a favor and keep your phone clean!
8. Experiment with your look.
The cool thing about fashion and beauty is that it means something different to everyone. By taking charge of your look and trying out new styles, not only are you building confidence, but you're one step closer to becoming the diva that I know you are. Break the mold in 2016 and try some cool looks that you might have been too shy to try before. Bright purple lipstick? Neon tights? Six inch platforms? No problem.
9. Set aside time for beauty.
I hear a lot of people everyday say that they just don't have time to put into things like face masks and manicures. Well, that ends today! Beauty regimens aren't just important in order to maintain a healthy body, but they're also important for your mental health. Your beauty regimen is you time. Make an effort everyday to take care of yourself and you'll find that you'll be better prepared to tackle your day.
10. Educate yourself on an unfamiliar topic.
OK, you might be looking at this one like "what?", but trust me, I'm going somewhere with this. Enriching your knowledge bank and putting effort into learning new things is just another aspect of beauty. Get those beautiful brains pumping and listen to a podcast about why people blink, or maybe an article about medieval religions. Your brain is one of the most beautiful parts about you and you have to take care of it, too.
11. Exfoliate at least once a week.
The amount of dead skin cells that pile up on your skin in a week is incredible. Do yourself a favor and scrub away the dead skin to reveal the baby smoothness waiting underneath. This will help make your skin super soft and smooth, just the way you like it!
12. Stop wearing makeup every day.
Your skin needs to breathe a few times a week so pick a day and decide to just sleep in instead of putting on makeup that day. Especially on days where your skin may look a little more dull or you may have a few extra blemishes, it's super important that you don't cake them up with makeup. Give your skin some space to heal, and you'll be thankful.
13. Stop biting your nails.
Your body puts work into growing those nails so stop ripping them out! Not only does biting your nails lead to an increase in bacteria, but it can also cause dental harm and lead to stunted growth in your nails. Instead of biting them off, just file or trim them and your nails and teeth will be much happier.
14. Laugh more.
It's true that laughter is the best medicine. Not only does it relax your body which can lead to fewer stress blemishes, but it also boosts your immune system and burns calories. Plus it just feels good to laugh after a long day.
15. End everyday with at least three things that you love about yourself.
You know, it's hard sometimes, getting out of bed, looking in the mirror, and realizing that you've got a whole life to live. Sometimes, it's hard to even look in the mirror and find things that you love about yourself without attaching a "but" behind them. In a culture that is increasingly more focused on beauty, sometimes it's difficult to remember why it is that beauty is important in the first place. Your beauty is all about you. It isn't defined by anyone else, or even this list (as awesome as I think it is). The most important beauty tip of all is to grow to love yourself and then to want to take care of yourself because of that love. It might be a short list at first, but look at yourself in the mirror everyday and find the unique parts about you that make you so incredible. Wash. Rinse. Repeat.
