Dear 14-Year Old Me

What I wish I knew at fourteen.

Dear 14 year old me,

I want to start off by saying that Justin Bieber does get rid of his bangs. He really does have a forehead. Also, you will realize, if you haven’t already, that his Never Say Never film dies quickly.

And the royal wedding? The wedding of the century between Prince William and Kate Middleton? Still the wedding of the century.

Want me to really freak you out? There is an app called snap chat- you may have heard of it in passing - and it is basically the sneakiest way of communication. Every single time you send one they actually disappear forever after so many seconds. It even gives you a puppy dog face which you will post on your public story at least 24573 times.

Can I let you in on a secret? It isn’t over for Oprah Winfrey! The Oprah Winfrey show may be over, but she now has her own TV channel called the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). That way everyone gets a candle.

If you think things are falling apart because Hannah Montana ended, it gets a little crazier with Miley. You will never be able to look at a sledgehammer the same.

From the drama of Katy Perry and Russel Brand splitting up after 14 months of marriage...

to Kim Kardashian and her 72-day-long marriage to Kris Humphries, a lot happened five years ago. By the way, it is really easy to keep up with the Kardashians now. And the Jenner’s. Bruce is now Caitlyn and Kylie now has a curvy body and big lips. It’s amazing how time and money can change people.

Five years can hold a lot of possibilities, and I’d like to encourage you with this:

College, though it is stressful and oh-so-challenging, is so much fun. Even though there has been a lot of challenges with transferring, college has easily been the best years of my life so far. You are going to learn a ton about things you will never use a day in your life (sound familiar?) but you will also get phenomenal training in the career you want to pursue. College is a stepping stone. The friendships you make and/or build on in college are the ones that you will really want to hold onto. HIGH SCHOOL FRIENDSHIPS RARELY LAST. And that’s really OK.

Love your mom and dad. They bust their butts to give you the world- and get you through your undergrad. BTW, your mom knows EVERYTHING! Spend time with your family. Be intentional about making time for your little brother. He really looks up to you. In only 5 years from where you are, he will be the one navigating through high school. And we know high school is rough.

That boy you are worried about? Here is an update: you haven’t thought about him in years. You’re 14. Stop. Guard your heart, because there are so many boys out there with dark brown eyes and all of the right words. Take time to have fun out with the girls. God has a good one on the way I swear.

In 5 years, you’re going to see that a lot has changed- change is a good thing. But you will always be that super awkward, fun-loving, deep relationship building, pizza fanatic. Hang in there. Queen B (Beyonce) has a beautiful daughter AND you will actually fill out your jeans.

XO,

Megara

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
