14 Things I Learned When I Was 14

This week is my last week being 14. It really got me thinking that I've been on earth for quite some time now, and during this time I've learnt a whole lot about myself and others. Even though I don't know everything yet, there are still a couple lessons that have really shaped me as a person. So here are just 14 things that I've learned this past year.

1. Friends come and go

Your friend group is always changing. Things will happen and people will go but in that process you'll discover new lifelong friends!

2. It's ok if you still don't know what you want to be when you grow up

So you want to be a doctor? Lawyer? Musican? Designer? Whatever it is, it's ok if you still dont know. Thing's start coming into focus as you learn more about the world and yourself.

3. Never compare yourself to others

Mentally. Physically. In any way, comparison is dangerous. You are your own wonderful person with different strenghts and weaknesses to others. So dont be afraid if your a little different.

4. Grades mean alot; but there are some things that mean more

Like mental and physical health. I should of known this better when I would be up till 2 am studying on school nights. Save your sanity, and just know that your health, rest, and social life are worth more in the long run, than just a number on a piece of paper.

5. Enjoy every moment because one never repeats

Laugh, smile, love, dance, and take in every moment as much as you can. Time never repeats itself.

6. Everybody deserves a chance; so never be one to judge

A person is much more than their appearances. Sometimes behind the most silent souls lies the kindest person.

7. There's no problem that a little green tea and good music can't fix

Shoutout to all my beloved spotify playlists.

8. Be a reflection of what you'd like to recieve

Sometimes you got to step back and think to yourself that if you met the person who you were today, would you be friends with that person? Would that person treat you with kindness and respect?

9. Highschool will change you; but don't ever let it change your values

Going into highschool, you realize that now you're going to be surrounded by even more people than ever before. This means you're gonna see a lot of stuff you never even heard of in middle school. Long story short, stay on the right path no matter how many go off it. Follow your gut and stay true to yourself.

9. Your mom will always be your #1 bestfriend

No matter how much advice you'll hear, your mom's is the best.

10. There's more to being healthy than just having "the body"

This means way more than eating right and having physical activity. It took me awhile to learn this, especially since being a teenage girl in today's media influenced society, there is a pressure to have the "skinny-curvy model body". Mental health matters as much (even more possibly) than physical health does.

11. Your association is a reflection of who you are as a person

Make sure your squad is going where you want to go in life. The closest friends reflect who you are and what you stand for so make sure you chose them wisely!

12. There's so much to be thankful for everyday

I feel like everyone in this day and age is guilty about complaining about a first world problem at least once. "I hate my phone. Cant wait till my upgrade" or "The lunch at school is disgusting tbh". I guess sometimes we make our problems so big in life, that we forget about how great the blessings are.

13. Do what you are passionate about, no matter what anybody says

Being Indian, they say you can either be a doctor or a engineer. However, being one of those isnt the only way to be considered "successful" in society. If you follow your passion to the fullest, anything is possible. Doing what you love will pay off more in the long run on you and the world around.

14. Parks and Recreation is a show I can relate to on a spiritual level

Okay but seriously though, 14 years into life and i've finally discovered my all time favorite show...

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
