“It’s okay to be scared, it means you still have something to lose.” Like your sanity.
College. It can be pretty rough. There are times when you’re not totally sure what you’re doing, why you’re doing it, and if you should still keep doing it. It reminds me a lot of how Meredith Grey and her pals felt during pretty much every second of their lives.
1. Dealing with that professor who doesn't explain anything.
Could you give us a little more to go off of than the one sentence description on the syllabus?
2. Pulling an all-nighter. Like, every night.
There are only so many days you can go to class
without showering and smelling like coffee and that gross section of the
library.
3. Seeing a group of high school seniors touring the campus during finals week.
They just seem so new and shiny, and you feel and look like something on “The Walking Dead."
4. Experiencing finals week in general. That week where the library and every coffee shop within a 10 mile radius is packed and you are closer to death than you’ve ever been.
5. Doing group projects.
Because there’s nothing quite like doing a project meant for four people all by yourself but still putting three other names on the title page. By the way, on the anonymous peer review forms, I’m telling the professor everything.
6. Staying in your dorm room by yourself when your roomie goes home for the weekend.
Your room is scary enough with her across the room from you. But now, there are 1,000 nightmares running through your head, and you can’t stop seeing that trailer from the most recent horror movie released. Also, this is definitely the weekend where you’re going to have a mental breakdown.
7. Explaining to your parents that you're okay, even if you're not.
“Yeah, everything’s good. I’m just tired.” said every college student who is confused about what to do with their life and about the boy/girl who won’t text them back and who’s missed the last four math classes and the test is next week. But yeah, we’re okay.
8. Approaching finals week and not remembering anything you've learned.
What do all of these words on my notes mean?
9. Making plans with your friends after a long week.
Because what used to mean getting dressed up and going out has turned into eating away all of your money and wearing your gross, stained sweatpants.
10. Getting halfway through your degree program then changing your major.
It’s normal, it happens. It’s just one of the worst feelings in the world. But in the end, you’ll be happier. Right?
11. When the Wi-Fi goes out one hour before your assignment is due.
It’s fine, except you’ve spent the past three weeks researching, typing, and retyping this 14 page masterpiece, and right now you can’t submit anything online. And you also can’t e-mail your professor to fix the situation. Now is the time to panic.
12. You can't remember what it's like to not be stressed, truthfully.
Was there a time when I felt pure joy?
13. Dealing with those people who graduated in four years with honors, in a Greek organization, working 40 hours a week, taking care of two dogs, hanging out with their hundreds of friends, and being relationship goals.
Basically, just seeing that one person who’s got this whole college thing down. Newsflash: they don’t. Just because it seems like someone else has it all under control doesn’t mean they do. Most of us are struggling. We just don’t see them struggle as much. Wear your struggle like your favorite shirt, it gives hope to the others.
Basically, college is the best time of your life that wraps around a few incidences that seem like the worst times of your life. Meredith Grey says, “When the ground gives way and your world collapses, maybe you just need to have faith. And trust that you can survive this. Maybe you just need to hold on tight. And no matter what, don’t let go.” Keep hope, because there are good times to come.
