Some people are fortunate enough to have a keen sense of direction, while others, including myself, are not. Being directionally-challenged is something I've come to accept over time and have therefore been able to adjust to. But that doesn't mean that the teasing from friends and family has ever stopped. So to reassure people that they are not alone in this matter, here are 13 things that anyone bad with directions can relate to.
1. You always factor in an extra 15 minutes into your travel time, just in case you get lost.
2. In the likely event that you do get lost, you've mastered the art of inconspicuously following someone who looks like they know where they're going.
3. You've wondered if those pedestrians realize that you've driven past them twice now while searching for your destination.
4. Thanks to public transportation, the term "going nowhere fast" takes on a whole new meaning when you lost while traveling. BART system, I'm looking at you.
5. You get frustrated when destinations are put in terms of north, south, east, and west. No, I do not know where the "northeast" wing of the building is.
6. "Sorry I'm late, I got lost" has become one of your catchphrases.
7. Navigating your way around campus on the first day of classes each semester is a nightmare. No, really, you've had stress dreams about it.
8. Your family and friends were terrified when you finally got your driver's license, because driving alone means you can't rely on someone else to give you directions.
9. Google Maps is almost always open in the background of your phone.
10. Real maps give you headaches. What do you mean you can't "drop a pin"?
11. If your friend offers to drive ahead so you can follow her, you will - and have- run through any and all red lights so that you don't lose track of her car.
12. You've pretended to not be a local because you didn't want to admit to that tourist that you cannot, in fact, give him directions to the closest gas station.
13. You're never the designated navigator in the car because, well, it's just best for everyone if you're not.
