From the perspective and experience of a new kid.

"So we are moving to Oklahoma?" I asked, letting our new location sink into place for a minute. When my parents said we were moving 10 hours away from Tennessee, I immediately pictured a state like Florida where I'd spend my summer under palm trees and by the beach getting a glistening tan. We've moved all over the southern states, so I never exactly imagined myself living somewhere "out west" like Oklahoma. Before I knew it, the end of May was upon us and now I can officially call myself an Okie. Okay, I've only lived here for a week, so maybe I don't have that title yet. Nevertheless, moving is always tough, but it's easier when you think of all the unique experiences waiting for you! So I've created a list of what I think is exciting about my new life in Oklahoma. And if something even better exists in this state, help a sister out and let me know!

1. Massive, never ending sky

The sunrise in the morning is something I love waking up to, and the sunset in the evening is even more gorgorgeous.

2. Home of Sonic

Fast food has never been the same. And apparently the Brown Derby is here in Shawnee, so that's a big deal. My fellow Tennesseans will be so jealous.

3. Route 66

Disney's movie "Cars" first introduced me to this historic road, but I never imagined I would have the chance to ride along. It belongs on my summer bucket list for sure.

4. OKC Thunder

Okay now this is a big deal. Anyone living in the US knows Oklahoma is the place to be regarding pro ball. Unless of course you like the Warriors better.

5. Braum's

Apparently these exist in other states, but Braum's was founded in Oklahoma. Be proud of your state people. Sonic and Braum's. What ingenuity.

6. Cows

During house hunting in the country, I thought I heard my phone loudly vibrating to indicate a phone call. Turns out it was the friendly neighborhood cow. Did you know there are more of these creatures than people in Oklahoma? Not sure how thrilling this actually is, but I'll let you know after I've been here for a while!

7. Rodeos

Like cows, rodeos are not unique to Oklahoma, I'm fully aware. But from what I've been told, there's a big rodeo coming to Shawnee in July, and maybe I should be honored to even live in this hallowed city during such a massive event.

8. Moore Warren Theatre

Dang y'all, have you been inside this place? It's like a movie theatre and a casino had a baby. I can tell you from firsthand experience that watching the new "Captain America" movie here was a blessing. 10/10 would totally recommend!

9. Sweet tea

A part of any southerner's daily diet. When it comes to my tea, I'm just thankful we moved to Oklahoma instead of Michigan where the devilish drink called unsweet tea remains more popular.

10. Falls Creek

Obviously, I've never actually been, but you don't have to live here for long to discover it's super duper important in the lives of Oklahoman Christians.

11. Home of OBU

My dad brought us to Oklahoma for a reason, and his new position at OBU plays a big role in it. Although classes haven't started, I can already tell that OBU will be a big part of our lives. Plus their mascot is a bison, so what's not to like?!

12. Country Accents

So maybe I'm experiencing slight culture shock from living in what I believe to be the west. However, there are some southern roots here! Nothing's sweeter than feeling that classic southern hospitality with a single "y'all."

13. Moi

Am I royalty? No. But surely the state value has exponentially increased with my presence, right? ;)

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
