Summer break is great in theory. After those dreaded final exams you want nothing but to be as far away from the classroom as possible. Then, about a week later, you want nothing more than to be back at school with your friends. When you were a kid, you lived for summer, but once you start college, summer starts to lose it's luster. It's hot, the pool isn't as fun as it was when you were a kid and vacation is expensive, not that you have time for any of that because you're at work 24/7. But I didn't come here to tell you why summer starts to suck when you become an adult, no, I came to tell you why summer starts to suck when you spend the entirety of it missing college. Here's a list of 12 things you miss when you leave school for the summer:
1. Your freedom.
I thought I'd start with the most obvious.
2. Your room.
That dingy, white-walled prison cell has a very special place in your heart.
3. Your roommate.
No matter your differences, your roomie is your roomie and you've been through the ringer together. They're always there to lend an ear when that girl you can't stand does that thing again and to offer advice when you think you've met your true love for 15th time this month.
4. Your schedule.
As much as you hate to admit it or hate to love it, your schedule gives you some sort of inner peace. Maybe you don't quite miss your 8 AM, but I know you miss 10 AM brunch with the gang.
5. Your meal plan.
Because let's face it, your mom doesn't let you drink chocolate milk with every meal.
6. Your social life.
Maybe you miss the parties, or maybe you miss Friday movie nights. Either way, you work all summer, so say goodbye to those for a while.
7. Your adventures.
Whether you discover a new Target on the other side of town or drive around the rich neighborhoods calling dibs on the houses, anything is an adventure when you're with your friends.
8. Your college attitude.
One of the best things about college is the you that you are at college. You feel free to be yourself and you have such a positive attitude! i.e. "I can totally run on 2 hours of sleep!"
9. Going to the grocery store and NOT seeing your entire graduating class from high school.
No comment (or eye contact).
10. Your friends.
There's something really special about the friends you make in college. Not only do you live with them, but you rely on them, in fact, similar to the way that college is your home away from home, your friends are your family away from family. Not to mention that no 10 pm dance party or late-night Target run is the same without them.
11. Your campus.
There's nothing better than walking to class on a dewy morning, or looking across campus after it's been covered in fresh snow. This love goes a little further than just your campus though, you love your adopted city more than anything.
12. Your home.
Don't get sad Mom, get proud! This is the new home you've made for yourself, one where you can practice being on your own, but still at an arms length away from your parents because you have no idea what you're doing.
