Blame the Media.

12 Things I'm Tired Of Hearing About In 2016
Zomi News Journal

We are barely three months into the new year and I am tired of hearing about Donald Trump on the news. To be honest I'm tired about hearing the same old junk on the news 24/7. Here's a challenge: Watch the news early in the morning, check again in the afternoon and then again before you go to bed. Did you notice anything different about the stories? Probably not.

Here are 12 Things I'm Tired of Hearing About in 2016:

1. Donald Trump

This is number one on the list only because it seems like you can't escape him. He's on your television screens, he's always trending on Facebook or Twitter, it's like you can't get away from him. Can we build a wall around him and make the media pay for it?

2. "I'm white and poor, I don't have white privilege!"

White privilege has nothing to do with being economically inclined. You can be poor, white and still have privilege. White privilege has to do with being awarded more opportunities and advancing further in society simply because you are white. I would go further but if you are still confused, please do your research.

3. "So because I'm white I'm racist!"

No. NO. Being white does not automatically make you a racist, same way that being black does not make me a thug. You can't get rid of white privilege or darken your skin in a feign attempt at equality. What you can do is just be made aware of it and how it affects your peers.

4. "Obama is the worst President in history."

I will agree that Obama had his faults. No one is perfect. I believe that there is no perfect President, but some people have failed to understand the branches of the government and how they work. Obama can't pass laws or implement any of his plans if he has a stagnant Congress. We have had the worst Congress in history, with them refusing to pass or negotiate any laws, shutting down the government and their futile attempts to repeal Obamacare. Don't blame the President, he's done all he's can. Blame the people YOU voted into office.

5. Muslims

I think this just speaks for itself. Islamophobia is not okay. Stop blaming the majority for the actions of a few. There are radicals in every race, religion and gender. But they do not represent the ideas of the group.

6. "ALL LIVES MATTER"

Yes, all lives do matter and no one said they didn't. No one is saying that black lives matter more. The Black Lives Matter movement is simply saying that black lives matter IN ADDITION to all lives. Police officers need to be accounted for their wrong doings. Until that happens: Black Lives Matter.

7. "The Irish were slaves too!"

Yes, the Irish received unfair treatment, but they were not slaves in North America. They were indentured servants, which meant if they finished their "sentence," they would be granted freedom. African Americans did not have that option. African Americans were treated like chattel and shaped the economic and social structure of the United States. But even after we have been emancipated the effects still last today. So stop using this excuse to once again marginalize and silence out voices. We deserve to be heard.

8. "What about Latinos, Asians and Native Americans?"

This is a recent argument that has come about with other people of color complaining about their lack of voice. I, an African American female, cannot speak on the issues that an Asian American male or a Native American woman face each day. It wouldn't be fair for me to speak on something I do not know about. If you feel that you are not being heard, then you need to speak up. No one is excluding you from the movement, it is your choice to join.

9. "God isn't real."

Not everyone is religious, and I don't mind. We all grew up differently and I enjoy speaking with those of different religions and experiences. But please don't demean someone's religion, just because it doesn't align with your ideals. If you don't believe that God is real then fine, but don't tell me that he isn't. I think we all need to respect each others religion. If you don't practice it fine, but leave me be. Don't tell me what I should and shouldn't believe.

10. "Only lazy people support Bernie Sanders."

Wanting affordable healthcare and education is not being lazy. We all have a RIGHT to those things and it's ridiculous that a majority of families have to choose between education for their children and putting food on the table. Some of the most hardworking people I know support Sanders. This isn't about having things handed to us. It's about giving a helping hand and using the government's money efficiently.

11. "We don't need feminism!"

We won't "need" feminism when a woman who claims to be a victim of sexual abuse is not ridiculed and denounced for being false, but is instead comforted and assisted when needed. It's 2016, stop blaming the victim.

12. Anything from the media.

The media used to be a good place to receive news, but in all honesty it's complete trash. I want the media to report on important things going on. Like for instance what is going on with the Flint water crisis? Why do people here in America not have clean water? Stop talking about Donald Drumpf and his wall and start talking about the issues that matter.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
