12 Reasons You Should Go Greek

And why I'm happy I did

12 Reasons You Should Go Greek

With school right around the corner, I thought I would share my honest thoughts on why you should consider going Greek.

I never imagined myself joining a sorority. It never once crossed my mind when I went away to college. Going into my second year of college, I thought I would give it a shot. After all, what did I have to lose? I went through recruitment with an open mind, not knowing anything and I am so happy I did. I wasn’t sure how everything would end up, but I am so thankful to have found my “home.”

1. Gaining new sisters and brothers is worth it all.

And not because you paid for them, as some people think. You join a family -- a home away from home -- and they will always be there for you. They’re your greatest support system (besides Mom and Dad) and they will cheer you on happy days and help pick you up on sad days.

2. People in the Greek community will also become your friends.

“Your big knows her because her best friend's little met her through recruitment.” It’s crazy how many people you meet in and outside of the Greek community once you join and how supportive they are of you in your chapter.

3. The philanthropic experience is life changing.

Whether you were a huge advocate of the philanthropy before you joined or not, you will be once you become a member. It touches your heart in many ways and you feel strong and knowledgeable on the topics and current situations. Also, supporting other philanthropies and going to events is fun!

4. Venturing out of your comfort zone becomes a habit.

You’ve never played flag football in your life, but I bet you’ll join the intramural team with your chapter.

“I’ve always been afraid of heights but this rock climbing sisterhood sounds like so much fun, I think I’ll try it out!”

5. You find your person.

The person whom you just met a few months ago, but will do everything and anything with you and for you. You will be forever grateful for them.

6. Different opportunities arise.

Joining Greek life opens you up to many opportunities you would have not necessarily experienced other wise. Going to Jamaica and helping children with 30 other sisters from around the U.S. is a trip of a lifetime.

7. Do it for the big/little experience.

Having that mentor and person (or family) to look up to really influences you. You want to become just like them and follow right in their inspiring footsteps. They will forever change your life.

8. Live and learn.

Being in your chapter has many responsibilities. Your actions speak for your chapter so you learn to become more responsible. Time management comes in handy when juggling life and being a part of your chapter helps.

9. Take charge with leadership.

So many leadership opportunities are presented to you. Whether it is in your chapter as an Exec member or a Council member- you are experiencing leadership. Also, within the Greek community you become more involved and can take on leadership in other organizations as well.

10. Values connect one another.

One of the reasons you find your home is based on the values. You join a group of people with the same values, which makes your bond even closer. You live by these values daily with your sisters/brothers reminding you why you are such a great asset to the chapter.

11. The connections and networking are helpful.

Being involved in Greek life connects you to people everywhere. When you’re applying for that dream job of yours and the boss was a member of your chapter- you automatically have that special connection and will bond instantly.

12. Memories will last a lifetime.

Lastly, you should Go Greek because of all the memories you will make throughout your college experience. From formals to philanthropies to sleepovers in the house -- they will be your favorite memories of college.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
