Oh look, another open letter!

Odyssey

There's no doubt that Odyssey is a great way for the younger, college-aged generation to have their voices heard. However, we all must admit that there are some Odyssey article topics that tend to pop up in our Facebook newsfeeds way more than others. Here are 12 Odyssey article topics that have become cliche.

1. "An open letter to..."

Odyssey is probably best known for open letters and for good reason. There are a LOT of open letter articles out there. People write open letters to just about anything: boyfriends, friends, family, pets, food, companies, etc. The open letter format is way overdone and next thing we know, we will start seeing an open letter to the flip flops that broke while taking a shower in a community bathroom.

2. "...And that's okay"

It seems like whenever people write an article about their opinions or lifestyles, they have to end it with "and that's okay." We get that you think it's okay; why else would you be writing about how you are not best friends with your parents? It's an unnecessary addition to titles that has become overused and cliche, just like open letters.

3. Boyfriend as best friend

I guess a lot of people consider their boyfriend to be their best friend, as I have seen the same variation of this topic at least ten times. It's not exactly groundbreaking to consider your significant other to be your best friend, especially when dozens of other girls are writing the exact same thing. Bonus points for the fact that the reasons are always the same as well.

4. To party or not to party

There is a prolonged debate on the Odyssey about whether people should party or not. Some people defend the fact that they choose not to drink or party while others argue that it's perfectly acceptable to do so. Nobody really cares whether someone chooses to party or not in college. How about we all agree to let people live their lives and leave this topic in the dust?

5. Being single

Every day I see at least one article shared by Odyssey related to the idea of being single: why someone is single and not ready to mingle, struggles of being the single friend, why it's okay to be single, etc. I guess single people get irritated of all the relationship and boyfriend as best friend articles, so want to remind Odyssey readers that single people are out there too.

6. Anything relating to moms

It seems as if there are billions of articles out there about how moms are best friends or being similar to your mom. Maybe the reason so many mom articles are written is because people think it would be sort of cool for their moms to be scrolling through Facebook and seeing an article they inspired on their newsfeed. This idea is shared by way too many authors though.

7. The same few T.V shows, like Grey's Anatomy, One Tree Hill, and 13 Reasons Why

The amount of articles that have been written about each of these shows is crazy! They are the shows everyone seems to love and have to write about, as most college girls can scream "OMG SAME" while reading them. Also, it's impossible to resist seeing which character you are based on your zodiac sign.

8. College life

College is very... interesting. A lot of crazy stuff happens and some of it is stuff that truly only can happen in college. This tends to translate into many articles being written about the wonders of dorm life and pulling all nighters. We've all experienced it; we don't need to read a ton of articles about it.

9. Bad blood articles

Break ups can be hard, whether it is with a person you are dating, a friend, or even a family member. They also tend to translate into Odyssey writers expressing their frustrations about "the person who betrayed their trust" into articles. The amount of salt in these articles is so real.

10. Greek life

You either love Greek life, or you hate it. Either way, there are so many articles relating to Greek life. Don't ever doubt that a sorority girl hates Greek life, as she has likely written or shared an article about being in a sorority or being a big/little. Those in Greek life are very passionate about it and talk about it a lot.

11. Complaining

Because Odyssey is such a great outlet for letting your opinions be heard, this leads to people airing their grievances with the world through articles. A lot of articles tend to be of a complaining nature and people will complain about literally anything.

12. Super controversial articles

Lately, these have mostly been about politics, but can be about pretty much anything. It's a known fact that if you write something controversial, it'll likely be shared by the main page and get a ton of views. If you're lucky, it may even warrant a response article. These always cause huge fights in the comments and lead to extreme anger.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
