As the holiday season comes around the corner, our free time becomes more available. I love being able to sit down and cozy up with a nice book. Sometimes though, it can be hard to find a new book or series to start. Well, I'm here to help, here is a list of 12 good books/series to check out when you want to curl up with a book this holiday season.
1. "The Infernal Devices," "The Mortal Instruments," & "The Dark Artifices" series by Cassandra Clare
I absolutely love these three series. All of these take place in the same world, but throughout different time periods. "The Infernal Devices" takes place in 1800 London, "The Mortal Instruments" takes place in early 2000 New York City, and "The Dark Artifices" takes place in modern-day Los Angeles. Most of the characters get referenced throughout the different books throughout these series. So, if you have time and love fantasy, friendships, adventure and crazy surprises, then this series is for you.
2. "The Book Thief" by Mark Zusak
If you're more into something more historical, "The Book Thief" relates to a young girl who learns to read and admire books throughout the craziness of World War II. This is a beautifully written book and has to be the best book-to-movie creations I've seen.
3. "The Selection" series by Kiera Cass
Now for a little twist, this is a story of a girl named America who gets put into the "selection" which is kind of like a "Bachelor" style competition. There are five books in this series that go on to explore the competition and what happens after. This is a whole new take on a princess story.
4. "Schizo" by Nic Sheff
This books truly put me in awe. "Schizo" is written through the eyes of a boy with schizophrenia who goes to search for his brother and it has to be one of the most beautiful books that I have read. As well as, giving the reader a perspective that wouldn't usually appear in a piece of literature.
5. "Jackaby" series by William Ritter
If you love mystery, adventure and Sherlock, this is the book for you. This book covers the life of R.F. Jackaby a detective for the supernatural and it is so different, but the stories are amazing. Even in the book's description it says, ""Jackaby" as a crossover between "Doctor Who" and "Sherlock,"" and it couldn't be more accurate.
6. "The Tiger Saga" series by Colleen Houck
Now for a cultural twist; if India is something that is intriguing to you, then definitely check out this series. It follows the lives of two princes who are brothers and due to love, they are cursed to be tigers. The book's focus is on their journey to find happiness and break the curse.
7. "The Opal Mask" series by Jenny Lundquist
This series reminds me of a girl version of "The Prince and The Pauper" because that is essentially what it is, but with a twist. One sister lives in a small village, while the other lives in a castle. But the sister in the castle must always wear an opal mask. There is a secret lying behind the mask, but to find it the sisters must go on a journey of discovery.
8. "Kissing Shakespeare" by Pamela Mingle
If England, theater and William Shakespeare is more your style, this is for you. This covers a girl whose parents are renowned Shakespeare actors in modern day society. While the daughter is working on a Shakespeare play at school, she gets dragged back in time to meet William Shakespeare. This covers her journey to help save him and history.
9. "Starcrossed" series by Josephine Angelini
Back to a cultural/historical switch; if you enjoy Greek mythology, then this is for you. This series covers the lives of a boy and a girl who want love, but the role of fate continues to get in the way. Read on to see the adventure that awaits and if the two defy fate for love.
10. "Steampunk Chronicles" series by Kady Cross
Now don't back away just because of steampunk, this series is truly astounding. It covers the life of Finley Jane who gets saved by a magic deep inside her and goes on an adventure with Griffin King to save London from an evil steampunk psycho. With the help of magic and steampunk, these characters go on an adventure.
11. "The Strange and Beautiful Sorrows of Ava Lavender" by Leslye Walton
This book focuses on the life of Ava Lavender, a girl born with wings who just wants to fit in. Ava has to learn to face the world and find love and trust, but darkness lies in the world she doesn't know. This was a tragically beautiful novel.
12. "Of Beast and Beauty" by Stacey Jay
Not your usual "Beauty and the Beast" story, but one that should not be skipped over. It still holds the concept of a beauty and a beast, except the beauty is destined for death to save her city and a beast who is after the same. This book creates a tragically beautiful endeavor of the beauty's fight for duty or love.
Enjoy your reading!
