Students of Ouachita Baptist University understand how special their school is. We are like a family here and we have events and traditions that are unique to our school. I often find myself having to explain what I'm talking about when I talk to people that aren't familiar with Ouachita. Here are 11 things that only Ouachita students truly understand.
1. The Ouachita Beanie
Each freshman receives their own beanie at the end of orientation week to signify that they are now a “tiger for life”.
2. No One Knowing About Your School
“Where is that again?” is a sentence you hear a lot when talking about OBU.
3. Our Social Clubs
Ouachita does not have sororities and fraternities, but rather social clubs. Greek letters are not a necessity, however almost every club has "chi" somewhere in the name.
4. TWIRP Week
The Woman is Required to Pay (TWIRP) is a week full of different themed parties held during the first few weeks of school. If a girl asks a guy to the event, she has to pay for him.
5. How to Spell “Ouachita”
We even have a song that spells it out for us.
6. Dr. Jack’s Coffee
Our very own coffee shop is named after the first president of OBU, Dr. Conger. Profits from the sales of Dr. Jack’s coffee goes to help care for abandoned children in Honduras.
7. Battle of the Ravine
All sporting events against the school across the street, Henderson State University, are called “the Battle of the Ravine." For football, it is the oldest rivalry game in the NCAA Division II.
8. Tiger Serve Day
Tiger Serve Day is a day held once a semester by the Ben M. Elrod Center for Family and Community, where hundreds of students volunteer to serve the community of Arkadelphia.
9. Tiger Traks
One weekend every April teams of students compete in various games to help raise money for student scholarships.
10. Refuge
Each week Campus Ministries hosts a worship service, called Refuge, for college students in Arkadelphia.
11. Tiger Tunes
This is probably the most important event that happens all year. The social clubs and members of both Campus Activities and Campus Ministries pick a theme and put on a show to help raise money for student scholarships.
