Admit it, we all love good ole Taylor Swift. From Teardrops On My Guitar to Wildest Dreams, T-Swizzle is my jam. I have spent countless moments sobbing in my bright-blue PT Cruiser to a song that brought back a wave of memories ripping open old wounds in pieces I didn't even know possible. All the while, pouring salt on new wounds as I yell the bittersweet lyrics of Picture to Burn after a recent heartbreak. Taylor Swift is so popular because she is SO relatable. Whether you're young or old, Swift gets us all in our feels. As I turned on Taylor Swift Radio the other day, I wanted to take us back to some songs that perfectly describe "That Boy."
1."That Boy" who makes you wish you were "Out of the Woods".
"Are we out of the woods yet? Are we out of the woods? Are we in the clear yet? Are we in the clear yet?" We all have had that guy where it seems like you are just lost in the woods looking for a way out and with every turn, you still seem to still be in the confusion of the dark, thick, expanse of forest." That Boy" and you are far from perfect and you are desperate to get out of those woods. To get an answer. To figure out where ya'll are going. This song perfectly describes this frustration of your relationship with "That Boy."
2."That Boy" who "Belongs with You".
We all have had that boy who is way out of our "league" according to our high school self-esteem. We compare ourselves to other girls who we deem "worthy" of the cutie on the baseball team because "she wears short skirts, and I wear T-shirts." Whether he knows it or not, we think he belongs with us, if he would just give us a chance. Sometimes you have massive crush on your best friend and "that boy" just can't see past the friend-zone.
3."That Boy" who you "Knew was Trouble".
Ahhh, yes the infamous bad boy. I have had my fair share of giving "That Boy" a chance even when I knew I was just "another notch in his belt." These boys get your hopes up with your fairytale-mindset as we hope and pray he will turn into that good guy in the movies. But, all too quickly we learn this isn't a fairytale. "That Boy" is now the reason for you yelling in your car when this Swift hit comes on. Come on ladies, let's move on from the bad boys.
4."That Boy" who you have "Bad Blood" with.
"That Boy" who immediately gets your blood-pumping and your heart racing when you see his truck pulling down the road, much less when you run into him in the grocery store. Let's just say that relationship did not end how you had wished and now seeing him is like "salt in the wound like he is laughing right at me." The relationship ended with a lot of hurt and no disclosure, which usually leads to long car rides blaring this heartbreak song with the windows down in your baddest aviators cause "Baby, now we got bad blood."
5."That Boy" who you thought you loved when you were "Fifteen".
Oh goodness, do I remember that "first love" way back when we walked through those double doors of freshman year. With all of the love in the world to give, we pranced into the unknown. That hottie who you can't believe just talked to you tells you they love you and "when you're 15 and somebody tells you they love you, you're gonna believe them." "That Boy" will always have a mark in your memory as they taught you you're first heartbreak, but also taught you that you're life and your dreams are bigger than your 15-year-old crush.
6."That Boy" who wants to come back around on his "White Horse".
"Cause I'm not your princess, this ain't a fairytale, I'm gonna find someone someday who might actually treat me well." Yes, Taylor, YES. This song brings such girl power and realization of our worth. As a lady, I have big romantic dreams like a guy taking me on his white horse back to his palace where he will protect me forever. "That Boy" failed to do just that, but that is OK because "this is a big world, that was a small town, they're in my rear view mirror disappearing now and it's too late for you and your white horse catch me now." Here's to you ladies and your dreams. Tell that white horse to take a hike.
7."That Boy" who is your "Dear John".
"Dear John, I see it all now that you're gone. Don't you think I was too young to be messed with? The girl in the dress cried the whole way home, I should've known."
"That Boy" who broke your heart and treated you like you didn't deserve to be treated, but you didn't realize it until after he was gone. "That Boy" who abused you, emotionally or physically, and you replay it a thousand times in your head. You are worth more. You deserve to be loved and cherished. "That Boy" may be your Dear John, but he is in your past.
8."That Boy" who is "Mean".
Sometimes "That Boy" is just mean.
9." That Boy" who you thought was your "Forever and Always"
The infamous words scattered through social media and all over love notes that you keep in a drawer in your room, "forever and always." These are such big words for such young people, but nonetheless they were said. "That Boy" you honestly believed you would be with forever and always, but suddenly it seems as if he now wants never and never. "It rains in your bedroom, everything is wrong" perfectly describes the feeling when your hopes come crashing down as he suddenly "forgets everything." "That Boy" isn't your forever and always, let's not take those words lightly, but save them for the real thing.
10."That Boy" who is your "Hey Stephen".
This cute song reminds you of "That Boy" who is pretty cute that sits in your afternoon class on Monday/Wednesday. This is a favorite because it is such a fun, crush song. Nothing too serious, just those typical butterflies in your tummy as you hum the tune because "you just can't help yourself." Good luck on "That Boy."
11."That Boy" who is now just a "Picture to Burn"
Whew weee, "redneck heartbreak who's really bad at lying" is a real thing alright. Can I get some backup ladies? "That Boy" charmed you with his southern roots, but ended up being just the opposite of a southern gentleman. This jam session is a mix of anger, humor, laughs, and a lot of tears as you evaluate "That Boy." And just for the record " I really really really hate that stupid old pickup truck."
There you have it as said by good ole Taylor Swift.
