UF Libraries

Marston and Library West are unarguably the busiest and most popular study spots on campus. Finals are here and if you're like me, you're scrambling in the Marston basement because your usual study spot has been taken by the finals week bandwagon-ers. To ensure you don't spend all your study time looking for a place to study, here are 10 alternative study spots around UF.

1. Maude's Classic Cafe

In the heart of downtown, Maude's Classic Cafe sits right at SE 2nd Place next to the Hippodrome Theatre. With indoor and outdoor seating, Maude's is perfect for when you need your caffeine fix considering it is a coffee shop.

2. Pascal's

Pascal's is a locally-owned Christian coffee shop located near campus with a self-serve coffee station, and a whole menu for your sweet-tooth. The two-story study center is located off of West University.

3. Karma Cream

Karma Cream is a Vegan ice cream and coffee shop in downtown Gainesville, just minutes away from campus. The organic shop is open until midnight, and the only study spot you'll find delicious ice cream at.

3. Pugh Hall

Aside from Pugh's Auditorium, there are booths cascading up the staircases. If you're in it for the long-haul, these booths are perfect for eating at all day while studying. Just don't get caught napping.

4. Smathers

Located right next to Library West, is the lesser-known, Library East, aka Smathers. Smathers is something straight out of Harry Potter and probably the cutest library on the main part of campus.

5. Reitz Union

Okay hear me out on this one. Reitz has plenty of seating throughout the entire building. The majority of the dining options in the food court close mid-afternoon, and after that the entire floor is basically a ghost town. If you want a room with a view, check out the Student Involvement Center on the third floor. With a giant window overlooking the Reitz Lawn, this spot is perfect for people-watching. If none of this sounds attractive to you, there's also couches near the ballrooms, and the social stairs at the North Lawn entrance.

6. Health Science Center Library

Located right near Shands off of Archer, the Health Science Center Library serves as a quiet study spot that the Med students swear by. Channel your inner Meredith Grey and get that essay done.

7. Levin College of Law Library

Located at the Law school, this is a prime study spot for when you want to reach optimum productivity. Like the Health Science Library, you may not want to come here with loud friends.

8. Carleton Auditorium

Carleton is open 24/7 during finals week, and since many students will be taking their exams in Carleton, they're not going to want to be in there earlier than they have to. This auditorium fits over 700 people, so even if it's not completely empty, there's still tons of room.

9. Classrooms at Night

Believe it or not, most of the classrooms aren't locked at night. With tons of desks and a whiteboard or chalkboard, you're set. It's like having your own Marston study room without the anxiety of waiting to be kicked out.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
