New Year's Eve and New Year's Day do not get enough recognition musically. There should be way more songs on the subjects. However, there are a lot of great songs on them that do exist. Here are 11 of the best

1. "This Is The New Year" by A Great Big World

This is not only a wonderful song for New Year’s, but it is a wonderful song in general. I can’t even exactly put into words how much I love this song. It’s upbeat in every sense of the word. The melody is energetic and the words are inspiring. So much positivity springs from the song. It’s the perfect anthem to start off the New Year in a hopeful and confident way.

2. "New Year’s Day" by Pentatonix

This song is similar to "This Is the New Year" in its power and positivity. Pentatonix is incredible at arranging and layering their songs so that they have a lot of depth. This song really displays that. It’s a cappella, but it doesn’t sound the least bit hollow. It’s so powerful and complex in its arrangement. It’s a gorgeous anthem that will make you feel strong and powerful and will inspire you to enjoy every single moment of the new year.

3. "Auld Lang Syne" by Andrew Bird

Auld Lang Syne has been done a lot of times and in a lot of ways. This twangy, folk version is one of my favorites. It combines some incredible ukulele and violin playing with the folk-country voice of Andrew Bird. The cover is really upbeat. It makes you want to have a big jamboree with all of your family and friends with a lot of dancing, singing and noise.

4. "What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?" by Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt

This is yet another song that has a lot of covers, but this one is just too adorable. It wasn’t professionally recorded and exists solely as an online video. It’s pretty casual, like two friends were just hanging out and decided it might be fun to film themselves singing together. Their musical talent is amazing, making it even better. Zooey Deschanel and Joseph Gordon-Levitt are just the cutest friends. Some other great covers of this song have been done by Ella Fitzgerald, Johnnyswim, The Head and the Heart and, surprisingly, Seth MacFarlane.

5. "New Year’s Eve" by First Aid Kit

Not surprisingly, a lot of New Year’s related songs are nostalgic and a little sad. This is one such song. It’s another folk-style song, but it’s a lot slower and more serious than Bird’s "Auld Lang Syne." It’s incredibly pretty and soulful. The lyrics are a combination of detailed descriptions of scenes and reflection on the self. It may not be the most upbeat New Year’s party song, but it’s great nonetheless.

6. "My Dear Acquaintance [A Happy New Year]" by Regina Spektor

This is another cover. The original is by Peggy Lee, an actress and singer who also worked on the Disney film "Lady and the Tramp." Both the original and Spektor’s cover sound very classic, and both are beautiful with a lovely piano melody. The song is very similar in some ways to the traditional versions of "Auld Lang Syne." It’s nostalgic in a sweet kind of way. Spektor’s version adds some background noises like a crowd making noise and sirens; they’re really unnecessary, but Spektor’s unique voice and classic style is still great.

7. "The New Year" by Death Cab for Cutie

This indie rock song is a little negative, but also hopeful. Ben Gibbard describes New Year’s scenes while also talking about his doubts. The melody is upbeat and intense with strong guitar while the lyrics are angsty. Despite it being a little sad, it’s very reflective, and a lot of times, songs like that are just as good as upbeat anthems of positivity.

8. "New Year’s Resolution" by Camera Obscura

New Year’s Resolution is similarly both upbeat and a little sad. It sounds a little like it could be from the '70s and in some parts is like Fleetwood Mac. It may not be the most New-Year’s-style song, but it discusses resolutions and shows some hopes for making changes in general and in a certain relationship.

9. "Nothin’ New For New Year" by Harry Connick, Jr. and George Jones

This song mixes the crooner style of Harry Connick, Jr. with the country style of George Jones. Jones was a classic country singer, and the song is heavily like the country music of the '60s and '70s. The combination works well together. The song is all about difficulties of finding someone to love and be with while also reflecting on that particular someone around New Year’s time. It’s a comforting, bittersweet country ballad with a crooner twist.

10. "Same Old Lang Syne" by Dan Fogelberg

I have listened to this song since I was a little kid. It’s from the '80s and isn’t played much anymore, on the radio or by my parents. My dad loves the song, and I remember listening to it a lot around the holidays when I was younger. He absolutely loves “story songs” and partially because of him, I’ve come to as well. This song genuinely is a full story in song form, and, as many of these songs have been, is very nostalgic and bittersweet.

11. "Happy New Year" by ABBA

ABBA may sometimes be a little outdated, but their dramatic, showy anthems are still great. "Happy New Year" is one such song. The band sings together at the chorus like a group of friends reminiscing on last year and imagining the year to come. It may be theatrical, but it’s hard not to love it and want to sing and dance along. It’s also hard not to be in a great mood after listening to it. It’s a perfect party song.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
