From the year 2000 'til about 2009-2010, there were a ton of muscial hits; some were one-hit wonders and others became nearly instant classics. Although the classics are labeled as such for a reason, the rest of the music from this decade or so has been pushed to the side in favor of whatever auto-tuned song I just listened to on the radio (which is a crying shame, let me tell you!) So here they are, in all their glory: the forgotten hits of the early 2000's.
1. "Lips of An Angel" by Hinder
Ugh, it really is such a good song. If the volume isn't the whole way up while you're listening to it, I guarantee you aren't listening to it correctly. (And, yes, there is a correct way to listen to this song.)
2. "Wherever You Will Go" by The Calling
You may have heard this song in the movie "Love Actually," but it was actually released two years prior to the movie's release. Either way, if you don't visualize some sort of dramatic, romantic gesture when listening to this song, you're either not listening to the right song or your heart is made of ice.
3. "Me & U" by Cassie
This song was released around the time that Rihanna also hit the music scene, which could explain why nobody remembers it as much, but this song is one of the most brilliant femme fatale songs from this decade.
4. "Wake Me Up When September Ends" by Green Day
A blend of nostalgia and denial makes for a weirdly good song. And with Billie Joel Armstrong on vocals, you might as well rename the song, "Perfection."
5. "Hanging By a Moment" by Lifehouse
Although this song might seem like the most random thing ever, it's probably one of the best songs on this list. This song always makes me think of two people on the brink of an amazing love story. (Just saying...)
6. "Fall For You" by Secondhand Serenade
This song always moves me to tears (or, at least, a very emotional state.) The vocals in this song are absolutely incredible, and the acoustic melody creates a melancholy, yet hopeful, mood.
7. "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" by Jet
The first time I heard this, I remember thinking that I would say "Yes!" if they ever directed their musical charms at me. It's hard to say "no" when the beat is so darn catchy.
8. "Beautiful Soul" by Jesse McCartney
Another song that makes my heart melt. There's just something about this song that makes the listener feel cherished and special. And Jesse McCartney isn't exactly hard on the eyes...!
9. "What Can I Say" by Brandi Carlile
One of the most depressing break-up songs I've ever heard, Brandi Carlile weaves a two minute and fifty second musical masterpiece. This song is all about a deep-seated loneliness, and how it seems that we never get things right/don't have anyone to turn to. Well-written, poignant and tear-inducing.
10. "Young Love" by Gavin DeGraw
Although one of Gavin's other songs is the main theme song in "One Tree Hill," this song steals the show. It talks of how young love is innocent, but, cynically, also talks about how tough it is, painting a picture of young love never working out despite its beauty and blamelessness. At the end, Gavin gives us hope when he says that he's found someone who gives him a reason to believe in the outcome of young love.
11. "Wait For You" by Elliott Yamin
This song is beautiful. Yamin's smooth voice, combined with the song's catchy beat and never-say-die attitude, make for a beautiful masterpiece.
Maybe some of these songs come up daily in your playlist, and that makes me immensely happy. But for the rest of us, who had to accidentally come upon an early 2000s hits playlist on YouTube, this list is an amazing starting point to navigate good music in the early 2000s. You're welcome.
