11 Signs That You Are at UNCG

I cannot hide that Spartan pride.

11 Signs That You Are at UNCG

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) is known to be the most diverse school in the UNC system. It is well-recognized for its liberal arts and business programs. It is full of international students and people of unique backgrounds. UNCG is one of those campuses that has a different atmosphere than other universities, and if you have never been to UNCG, you would see a lot of interesting people/things here.

1. Razor scooters are a form of transportation

At UNCG, Razor scooters are making a comeback. This trend began in 2014 when Ernesto Dennison entered the campus as a freshman and immediately became known as "scooter dude" for riding to class on a scooter while blasting music. Ever since he started that trend, more and more students began riding Razor scooters to class. They are also extremely convenient, since they fold up and can be carried easily.

2. Colorful hair is not uncommon

This campus is filled with artsy students who want to express themselves in different ways. Rainbow hair is this year's trend, and it is not a surprise to see crazy colors.

3. Music majors are everywhere

UNCG is widely known for its music program. Due to this, there are music majors left and right, and on sunny days, you will find music majors playing their instruments outside.

4. Popularity is far from being a thing

One of my personal favorite aspects of UNCG is the fact that it is so diverse that there are no popular groups. Even though there is Greek life on campus, those who are involved in Greek life are still open to having friends outside of their sorority or fraternity. It feels great to be in a world where everyone gets along.

5. The magical crosswalks never fail to give you happiness

UNCG has a large community of students who are disabled, so the crosswalks are designed to help people who are blind. Some of them make bird chirping noises when it is safe to cross, and others will actually talk when it is safe to cross.

6. You know the chaos of class changes

Gram is the only building that does not have multiple entrances to it, and it is also placed at the corner of an intersection. Any smart student avoids walking near Gram at all costs during class change times, for it is impossible to drive or walk near the intersection.

7. You've been to Yum Yum's

"Yum Yum Better Ice Cream" is the official name, but everyone refers to it as "Yum Yum's." It is an extremely old establishment (109 years old to be exact) and they are famous for their ice cream and pink hot dogs. With very reasonable-priced items, this is the perfect place for college students.

8. You know who Guy Sanders is

Anyone who has lived on campus is well aware of who Guy Sanders is. He is the guy that floods your e-mail daily, and he is the most joked about employee on campus. He is well aware that he is goofed on constantly, though. He is a great sport about it and will sometimes joke about himself in his e-mails.

9. You fear clock towers

UNCG is a very superstitious campus, and one of the biggest rules is to not walk under the clock tower. It is believed that if you walk under the clock tower, then you will not graduate on time. Occasionally, someone will walk under the clock tower while every single bystander gasps in fear.

10. Different languages are spoken

As I stated before, UNCG is the most diverse school in the UNC system. There are large amounts of international students, and it is not an uncommon occasion to hear languages from all over the world spoken.

11. You own a UNCG football shirt

Since UNCG does not have a football team, the joke is that we have been "undefeated since 1891" (aka the year that the school was established). The bookstore is full of football t-shirts, and they are widely bought each year.

I am a proud Spartan, and I am sad that I am already halfway through college. I am trying to view it as "the glass is half full" and create as many experiences as possible. If you have never been to UNCG and happen to be in the area, I highly recommend that you check out the amazingness of the campus.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
