Every makeup aficionado knows the true, emotional rollercoaster that is their relationship with cosmetics. We’ve all gone from only shopping for concealer and mascara to having over 1,000 Sephora Beauty Insider points. How could you have gotten to this point? Not only has it radically changed the allocation of your funds, but it’s changed your entire life.
Here’s just a few ways you know your relationship with makeup has become a long-term commitment:
1. You walk into Sephora like
Time to get pretty. Plus, you have a $50 gift card for your birthday and you’ve made a list of items you want that you saw on YouTube/Instagram tutorials.
2. But add up the prices of what you picked out and you’re like
Okay, so that $50 gift card only covers one of the items…
3. You decide to splurge anyway because, hey, you deserve it
With "Parks and Rec" echoing in the back of your mind, you feel content with your purchase.
4. You regret the spending… until you put it on
Yes, I know Elf’s $3 “Tea Rose” lipstick is a dupe for Kat Von D’s $20 “Requiem” lipstick but I was at Sephora, and there was only one left, and… OK maybe it was stupid of me to spend the extra — wait no, I look really good in this color… OK it was a good purchase. Worth it. I needed it immediately. Definitely.
5. You agonize over how easy makeup tutorials look, but when you try it
Yeah, I thought I got contouring right on my first try, then my mom pointed out all these unblended areas… halfway through my day.
6. You can remember when you first tried winging your eyeliner
It was so edgy, so daring. Now it takes you half the time and looks five times as good. And it made you want to try more “daring” looks. It’s a life-changer.
7. The first thing you notice about a person is their eyebrows
People vastly underestimate brow power. As a young teen, my mother would urge me to at least trim my eyebrows a bit, insisting that it “makes a huge difference.” I ignored her for years… until one day, after inspecting Megan Fox’s face and noting that her eyebrows were amazing, I decided to give myself the smallest arch — boom. Ever since then, I’ve been addicted and proclaiming the transformative power of good eyebrows.
8. Compliments on your makeup are the best you can receive
It’s better than just hearing “you look pretty.” Getting “your eyeliner is amazing” or “what do you use on your eyebrows?” as compliments means that this person thinks you look pretty and they recognize you put work into it and did nailed it!
9. You respect women who wear loads of makeup and those who wear none at all
You know how difficult (and expensive) it can be to get a lot of makeup to look so perfect, and you also know how lost you would feel with no makeup on at all, so you can respect both ends of the spectrum.
10. You cry a little when you see “She Went a Week Without Wearing Makeup – Here’s What Happened” articles, and she looks flawless without makeup
I’ve seen multiple versions of this concept and viewed them thinking it might make me feel more comfortable with my naked face. Nope, just made me wonder things like how it’s even possible for someone’s skin tone to be so naturally even. I’m sorry, but you aren’t helping anyone feel more confident, you lucky, beautiful woman.
11. Some may call it an obsession, but you think your bond with makeup is truly a healthy relationship
Like any healthy relationship, it makes you feel beautiful and confident with it, but you can still feel secure if you have to go without it for a bit. It may be a little love/hate at times (hate what it does to your bank account), but when you come home after a long day and see a package from that cosmetics site you ordered from last week… it’s all worth it.
