11 Reasons Why You Should Probably Attend GCU

Grand Canyon University. It's my home away from home. It's where I've met some life-lasting friends, experienced amazing basketball games, and been surrounded by some incredible people. I'm honestly so thankful that GCU is where I chose to go to school. I don't regret it one second, and every memory made here is something I'll remember for the rest of my life. Even though college can sometimes be rough, GCU is definitely a place that makes it worth it. If I would have gone back to my senior year of high school and had the choice to choose where I wanted to go to college, I would choose GCU every single time, and here's why:

1. We have one of the best student sections in the entire nation.

Students go nuts. The environment seen at our basketball games is something that you usually don't see. Everyone is dressed up, face paint on, chanting GCU cheers. Even if you don't go to GCU, go to one of our games. You won't be disappointed.

2. Our great selection of food on campus is a blessing.

From Chik-Fil-A to a grill located in GCU's hotel, the food here is great. We have so many selections, and if you ever get bored of them, Phoenix has some of the greatest restaurants to dine at.

3. It's warm. (Sometimes too warm, but you get used to it).

Yeah, GCU is located in a desert, which means it gets HOT. But, if you think about it, at least you won't have to worry about walking to class in a blizzard. 75 degrees in February? Count me in.

4. We have pools, hot tubs, and multiple gyms on our campus.

If you want to work out, go swimming, or even go chill in a hot tub, GCU has you covered.

5. People are extra kind.

The kindness I have seen from students at GCU is phenomenal and unlike anything I've ever seen before. It's a special environment where everyone is out to help one another.

6. The dorms/apartments are NICE.

We don't even know what community bathrooms are here. Every suite has at least two bedrooms and a giant living room area. It's like you aren't even in a dorm.

7. Everyone has crazy spirit.

People talk about upcoming events weeks before it even happens. You will often hear the words "Lopes up," and hear a lot of music and screaming on game nights.

8. It's faith-based.

GCU's foundation is to grow students who serve Christ and who are servant leaders.

9. You will get a ton of free t-shirts.

Expect to be handed a free t-shirt, pair of sunglasses, scarf, etc. at every game you attend.

10. The campus is beautiful.

I mean, it definitely will be after they finish construction....

11. Midnight Madness is probably the best thing since sliced bread.

Probably the most exciting event of the whole year, GCU students head out to the arena for a midnight pep rally. It's incredible. If you haven't gone, you're missing out.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
