Looking for the perfect vacation spot this summer? Look no further because I have the solution to your problem. It is the quaint and charming port city of Wilmington, North Carolina. With a population just over 113,000 it has a small town feel, yet offers oodles of adventures. From movie star sightings to historic establishments, there is something for everyone here. These are just a few of the reasons you should make Wilmington the next stop on your vacation:

1. The location

The city is located right on the coast of North Carolina. It radiates southern charm blended with east coast vibes, making it a perfect getaway spot.

2. The Riverwalk

Placed right downtown is the Riverwalk. It overlooks the Cape Fear river that goes right through Wilmington and is a great point in the city to watch the sunset.

3. Cotton Exchange

Another highlight of the downtown area is the Cotton Exchange holding various shops and restaurants. The building itself is an attraction with eight historic buildings dating back to the 19th century all connected together. Due to its ripe age, it is rumored to be haunted and tours are available.

4. Airlie Gardens

This is an absolute must-do. Occupying the garden's grounds includes an oak tree that is believed to be from the 1500s, a butterfly house, a trail that is over a mile long, gorgeous structures and of course luscious nature. It's no wonder many weddings are held here.

5. Wrightsville Beach

Just a quick 20 minute drive from Wilmington is Wrightsville Beach. It is "North Carolina's most accessible beach" and even has two piers to overlook the town and ocean, The Johnnie Mercer Pier and Crystal Pier.

6. Kilwin's Ice Cream

Stopping by this ice cream shop will not be disappointing. Even just the smells that spill onto the street are tasty enough to eat. Best schedule a couple of visits here.

7. History is everywhere

For those history buffs out there, the USS North Carolina Battleship, which fought in World War II, sits across the Cape Fear River where visitors are welcomed. Other historic attractions include the Cape Fear Museum, the Bellamy Mansion, the historic district and various tours that run throughout the year.

8. AKA "Hollywood East" or "Wilmywood"

Thanks to Screen Gem Studios, many movies and television series have been filmed here. Just to name a few: "One Tree Hill," "Dawson's Creek," "A Walk To Remember," "Iron Man 3," "Safe Haven," "Stuck In Love" and "The Secret Life of Bees." Many film locations are in and around the city to go visit.

9. The Nightlife

The fun doesn't stop when the sun goes down. The city has a lively nightlife with some establishments that offer live music, like Ziggy's By The Sea.

10. The Weather

Temperatures average between the 70s and 90s during the summer months making for prime opportunity to go to the beach, dine at an outdoor restaurant on the Riverwalk or even just strolling through downtown.

11. The overall experience

From the time you land at ILM, Wilmington's adorable and tiny airport, to the people you encounter to all of the exploring you will do, you will surely fall in love with this paradisiac city. I caution you though, if you aren't careful you just might want to stay forever.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
