Maine has always been one of my families vacation spots. We've always made an effort to go every year. We go to the same part of Maine every year, Ogunquit, because it's familiar and it's almost a second home to us now. People always ask me if we get bored of going there but honestly, not at all. Maine is one of the most underrated vacation destinations, in my opinion. There's so much beauty and fun in Maine that it makes it a prime New England vacation destination.
1. Ogunquit Town Center
This is one of the prime areas for "mom and pop" shops. All things touristy and all things unique to different personalities will be found here, along with awesome chocolates!
2. Marginal Way
The Marginal Way is found in Ogunquit and it is one of the most beautiful parts of Maine. It's a small paved path that walks the ocean line. With breath taking views and breath taking houses, it's definitely something that needs to be done!
3. Perkins Cove
Perkins Cove is at the end of the Marginal Way. It's a cute little hook of land that has shops and restaurants as well as a draw bridge where you can watch sail boats leave!
4. When Pigs Fly Bakery
Oh my gosh. I can't even eat bread and I love this place. The aromas of all the different breads they make fresh daily is pure heaven. They have anything from cherry pepper bread to Maine blueberry bread to chocolate bread (yes, chocolate bread.) Everything there is to die for!
5. York Lighthouse
Nubble lighthouse, located in York, is ABSOLUTELY a sight to see. Whether you go at sunset, sunrise, or mid-day, Nubble is always a perfect New England spot.
6. Guac -n- Roll
YAS. This is THE Mexican food joint in Maine. My family and I LOVE this place. If you want burritos the size of your head and guacamole to die for, this is the place.
7. Old Orchard Beach
Old Orchard Beach is the place to go if you're looking for more of a fun night on the town. The board walk and ferris wheel make for a carnival atmosphere and it's definitely the spot for friends to vacation to!
8. Bread and Roses Bakery
I know this article has basically been all food related, but I swear this place is the best. They have unreal fresh made pastries and the best coffee. It's the cutest little shop!
9. Take Flight Adventure Course
Although I have personally never done this, my brother and cousins have and they said it was awesome! Definitely not for the faint of heart or those with no upper body strength. This is one challenging course!
10. Kittery Outlets
This is one of the prime local shopping areas. It's an outdoor strip mall and it has everything from Stonewall Kitchen to Charlotte Russe. It's a great place to shop when you're looking for some quality (not heavily touristy) shopping!
11. The Beaches
No matter where you're staying or what you're doing, make time for the beach. Is it the prettiest water? No. Is it the warmest water? No. Will it make you happy? Absolutely. Maine beaches are perfect for picking sea shells and climbing through rocks. Beach days are always necessary.
So next time you're trying to find a new vacation spot, don't forget about New England. Maine is beautiful, every part of it, from the mountains to the beaches. Everyone should visit Maine at least once in their life, trust me, it'll be worth it!
