It’s that time of year again. Time for us all to make promises to ourselves for the new year that we will most likely not keep. Here are eleven New Years Resolutions that are worth keeping this year:
1. Smile More
Have you ever had a bad day and someone smiled at you and it made you feel better? Sometimes just your smile can make someone else’s day.
2. Love Yourself for You
We all have things that we wish we could change about ourselves. Whether it be the size or shape of our bodies, or our hairstyle, or just small blemishes. But let’s be honest, most of the imperfections we see in ourselves nobody else sees. It’s important to feel confident in our own bodies and in our abilities.
3. Feel Good About Doing Good
Sometimes just helping someone in need can make you feel better about yourself. Maybe you can help a friend out that needs someone to talk to. Or maybe you can volunteer at an animal shelter or a nursing home.
4. Compliment People
One of the nicest things you can do is to compliment someone and make their day. Tell your friend you like their hair or tell the person you sit next to in class you like their shirt. Not only will this make you feel good but it will make someone else feel good.
5. Don't Judge a Book by it's Cover
Truthfully, it can be hard to not judge someone based on their appearance or based on a stereotype, but it is important that you get to know someone before you base an opinion of them. You may find out that you feel like someone that you thought you wouldn’t. They could become one of your best friends.
6. Make Time for You
Sometimes we get so caught up in helping and doing for other people that we forget to do for ourselves. Find something that you like to do that helps you unwind. Every day make some time for yourself. Whether it be watching a television show or maybe even reading a book. Just make sure you find something you like and make time for it every day.
7. Push Away the Stress
Let’s all be honest; we all have stress. Whether you are like me and you are stressing out over your classes and your grades or you are stressed over family matters or work, there is always something to be stressed about. The important thing is to find ways to deal with your stress. Some ways that could help is listening to music, reading a book, finding a hobby, writing in a journal, or even just talking to a friend.
8. Be Happy
It’s important to be happy. Sure sometimes you get down and upset, but it’s all about rebounding from the sadness and becoming happy. So do what makes you happy. You only get one shot at this life. So make it worth living, be happy.
9. Make Time for the People Important to You
It’s important to spend time with families and friends. Make sure you show them they are important. Try to find time in your busy days to give your mom and dad a call. Call an old friend to see how everything is going. Maybe make a lunch date with a friend to just talk and get caught up on whatever has been going on in your lives.
10. Find What You're Passionate About
Every individual person is different. And each person has something different that motivates them and means something to them. Maybe you haven’t found that yet. Well, like they say, there’s no time like the present time. So find out what is important to you and go from there.
11. Put Down the Cellphone
The world we live in is very connected and we all love social media and texting. And I’m a victim of this myself. But start off by eating dinner with the people you live with around the table, without checking your phone! Then you can work from there.
No matter what your resolution is for 2016, or even if you have one, I hope you all have a wonderful year!
