Nothing brings the world together quite like the Olympics. Maybe we are all just super competitive (who knew I cared so much about some of these sports). The amazing athleticism is a feat to behold. Only a few days into the competition and I can't help but notice there are a lot of women kicking butt. Check out these great moments of #GirlPower we have seen so far!
1. Katie Ledecky not only wins gold, but smashes the world record!
Katie beat the world record (which she already held) by nearly 2 seconds and beat the next competitor by nearly 5 seconds. If she didn't have you screaming her name at the TV I don't know what will. Ledecky is currently the world record holder in the 1500m swim, but won't be able to compete. That is because the Olympics does not hold the event for women (kind of ridiculous). Way to go Katie, we will be rooting for you!
2. Katinka Hosszu destroys the world record in 400IM!
Watching Hosszu dominate as she swam to gold made me root for her, even though she beat out an American. Talk about girl power! Katinka shaved off 2 seconds from the world record and easily beat her competitors. Despite pretty sexist media coverage of her victory, she clearly is an amazing athlete who has accomplished something awesome!
3. Women's Gymnastics Gold!
Watching the U.S. Women kick butt and do things most of us can't even get close to doing is honestly super inspiring. Gymnastics never ceases to amaze me and captivates more and more people each year!
4. But honestly, just Gymnastics in general....
I'm no expert but that is pretty darn amazing!
It wasn't just the U.S. — the U.K. women killed it as well! Here I am just trying to reach the remote and these girls are flipping across a narrow beam!
5. Ellie Downie falls on her head and still competes.
After falling on her neck, you might think Ellie Downie of the U.K. would stop competing for the day. However, knowing her team needed her to complete two vaults, Downie continued competing. She even stopped for a minute to reapply her lipstick and then continued on kicking butt in Rio.6. Yusra Mardini wins her heat in swimming.
After pulling her boat to safety when the motor failed, Yusra Mardini competes for the refugee Olympic team. She won her first heat, going to show anything is possible. I know I, as well as many others, will be rooting for her.7. Dana Vollmer wins Bronze 17 months after giving birth.
Only the second female swimmer in U.S. history to medal after giving birth. To win a medal in swimming after having a child is pretty rare, making her accomplishment even more impressive than taking home a bronze in the Olympics.
8. Ibtihaj Muhammad is the first U.S. Olympian to compete in a Hijab.
Muhammad is the first U.S. Olympian to compete in a Hijab. Way to defy stereotypes and prove women can do anything!9. North and South Korean Gymnasts snap a selfie together.
Lee Eun-Ju and Hong Un Jong seemed to accomplish more with a selfie than decades of conflict have been able to. Photos between North and South Korean Gymnasts are probably the last thing that is expected, yet the two appeared friendly despite hostilities between the countries.10. Majlinda Kelmendi wins Kosovo's first Gold Medal...Ever.
Not only was this medal the first gold for Kosovo but also the first medal for the small country. Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in 2008 and was recognized by the IOC just two years ago. Just look at the joy on her face!
11. Australian women win first Rugby Gold in 92 years.
Rugby has been reintroduced into the Olympics for the first time since 1924. Women competed before the men, so when Australia took gold they received the first medal in rugby in 92 years.
