As spring has stepped aside to make room for summer, nature lovers and adventurers alike are seeking the best way to appreciate mother nature’s best summer qualities. If you are anything like me, you love being outside. You crave to see new sights and experience all the neat things nature offers, but sometimes it’s hard to think of things to do. However, fear not, I have compiled a small list of activities that feature ways to enjoy the outdoors. (P.S. All of these activities are either free or low-cost)
1. Watch the sunset.
Not sure what to watch on Netflix? I have a secret life-hack for you: turn off Netflix for half an hour and appreciate the sun. There’s nothing like watching a cotton candy sky at the end of the day to unwind.
2. Pick up litter.
Nature is neat, let’s keep it that way. There’s nothing more unattractive than a bunch of garbage littering a gorgeous view. Going to the park to make your local natural gems look beautiful is a great way to do your part, discover new places and have fun.
3. Go to a local park, trail, creek, lake, etc.
On sunny summer days, I enjoy spending time in what I call my “happy place.” My happy place is a local bike/walking trail along a river that flows through the area. I often walk on the trail or explore by the river. Many people say Muncie, Indiana has nothing to offer, but there are a lot of hidden gems waiting to be found throughout the area.
4. Go for a walk or hike with a buddy.
It’s a great way to get some physical activity (you have to reach those steps, right?), see new sights, and explore.
5. Go stargazing.
Don’t listen to what anyone says, you can be as single as a pringle to do this. I take myself on dates to watch the stars every now and then (I’m freaking awesome, okay? Is it so wrong to take yourself on dates?). Stargazing, like sunset watching, helps me relax. Grab your blanket, find a nice dark spot and watch out for those shooting stars.
6. Watch or catch fireflies.
Even if you’re not a bug person, you have to admit a bug that flies with a glowing butt that lights up the sky is pretty amazing.
7. Climb a tree (or sit under it).
If you like a good physical challenge, climb a tree. If you prefer to be on the ground, sit under the tree. Trees are rad. They provide all that oxygen and shade.
8. Read.
I have found myself with more downtime (and a lot less money) this summer than I anticipated. To combat my boredom, and my broke college kid status, I got a library card at my local library. When I find myself staring at the wall with nothing to do, I take my hammock or blanket and a library book outside to read.
9. Chill in a hammock.
I mean it’s a hammock… it’s like a floating outside bed…What’s not to like?
10. Stop and smell the flowers.
While it’s great to take lots of artsy pictures of thenflowers for Instagram or Snapchat (don’t worry I’m guilty of doing it too), make sure to take the time to put your phone or camera down so you can fully experience the beauty of life. It’s important to unplug and experience you surroundings. When I adventure, I often find myself leave my phone in my roomso I can focus on my present surroundings.
These ideas may seem cheesy and simple, but I highly encourage all of them. Life is beautiful when you take the time to appreciate it. Simple outdoor activities are the best way to be more at ease and appreciative of the environment. “Nature is one of the neatest things on this planet.” (Pepperbottom, Neature Walk).
