10 Ways To Make Sports Better

How to improve the sports we already love

I love sports, but I don't love everything about sports. There are some things that are really dumb, and some things that could be added to make it more fun. So here are some ideas:

1. Make the MLB season shorter.

Baseball is my favorite sport but there is no way I'll watch 162 games. Part of the reason the NFL is so successful is because they only play once a week so it's not hard to follow. I'm sure even the biggest baseball fanatic has trouble watching the Braves play the Rockies on a Wednesday at noon.

2. Get rid of ties in soccer.

All countries should do this but more specifically, the MLS should. When the NHL got rid of ties and sent every game to overtime, interest in the sport peaked and I think the same could happen with soccer in America. Nobody wants to see two teams play passively and end in a 0-0 tie so why not make it impossible to tie?

3. Stop giving a team a point for going to overtime.

In the NHL, if you force overtime and lose you still get a point to help you in the standings. That has to go. You shouldn't get rewarded for almost winning. You might as well just keep the ties.

4. Make hockey nets bigger.

While we're talking about the NHL, there needs to be more goals. Goals will attract more fans and will make the game entertaining. Right now you can throw a 200-pound athletic guy in the net, have him throw his glove up every once in awhile and win the game 3-2. More goals please.

5. Basketball teams need fewer timeouts.

If you're watching some hoops and see that there's two minutes left in a close game, you can be sure the game will probably last for another 20 minutes because each coach will use all of their timeouts. This doesn't even take into account all the fouls to stop the clock. Let each team have three timeouts like a normal sport.

6. Put boxing on real TV.

Fighting will always be a niche sport until you can watch it for free. Not too many people are going to go out of their way to order a Pay Per View fight. If you want more people to watch fighting, then put it on real TV.

7. Make golf carts race to holes.

Golf is a hard sport to play, but it doesn't take much movement. They even get to hitch a ride in a cart to get to the next hole. We can make a little side game out of this and have them race, maybe there'll be a crash or something.

8. Take the helmets out of football.

It would be cool to see the faces of your favorite players and I actually think it would make the sport safer. No one would go recklessly into a headfirst hit without a helmet on. The fights will probably be better, too.

9. Coaches should wear uniforms.

One of the best parts of watching baseball is seeing the coaches in full uniform, something unique to the sport. I think that every sport should have to do this. I would love to see hockey coaches in full gear.

10. Stop letting one team sign all of the good players.

The leagues need to step in and make sure balance remains. If Kevin Durant goes to the Warriors, I'll never watch basketball again.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
