Almost every person with a favorite television show had a favorite couple to go along with it. Whether you just think they are cute or you full on 'ship' them, there is always one. But only a few of those couples have so much love, angst, perfection and imperfection that make them our couple goals. From present day to the classic television, these are the couples that are ones to look up to.
1. Emma Swan and Killian Hook- "Once Upon A Time"
Usually people who are actual fairy characters are not the best examples of couples to look up to because usually it's the cut and dry happily-ever-after tale. In this case, there are a lot of ups and downs. She's a hero and he's a villain, they are friends for a long time before getting together and when things finally get better for them and he starts to become good, she becomes the villain. No matter what though, he is determined that she is somehow still the woman he loved and that is why they should be looked up to.
2. Meredith Grey and Derek Shepard- "Grey's Anatomy"
It is a unspoken rule in most places that you never date a co-worker and especially your superior. Usually it will just end in a very messy situation. That is exactly what happened with Meredith and Derek. They had one night stands and they broke up multiple times but they did finally figure out how to work together as a couple. Their mistakes and their realizations are what make them so relatable though. Unfortunately this couple is not one that got a full happily ever after.
3. Nathan Scott and Haley James- "One Tree Hill"
They say that young love never lasts. Sure, it seemed at a lot of times that Nathan and Haley would become another one of those couples that got together as a teenagers and fell apart when life got too hard but they always stayed together. A lot of things were thrown at them, things that may have at times seemed unrealistic but they handled them all realistically. They had a lot of problems but they never stopped loving each other.
4. Lady Sybil and Tom Branson- "Downton Abbey"
There's is the classic love story of two people from two completely different worlds. Originally connecting through political matters, he was able to give her an outlet for her ideas when her own family could not. Set in the early 1900's, her high class standing and his position working for her family was a huge opposition to their relationship. He was determined to wait for her to make a decision to defy her family and run away with him and his efforts were not in vein. Even without much support from her family at first, they married and had a child. This was another tragic story though because Sybil died soon after their daughter was born. As a testament to her, Tom named the baby after her mother and now does everything he can to give his daughter a good life, even if goes against some of his principles sometimes. He is an excellent example of the fact that sometimes with love comes sacrifice.
5. Jim Halpert and Pam Beesly- "The Office"
This was the couple that gave hope to everyone who had feared that they were going to be friend-zoned for life. From the start of the series, it was obvious that there was chemistry between them but Pam was engaged. Then as soon as Pam called off her wedding, Jim had tried to move on with someone else. Eventually though, they were both available at the same time and finally got together. Their relationship and subsequent wedding was riddled with complications and issues but they worked through it, even when things looked completely bleak. They both made very human mistakes and learned from them which only made them stronger.
6. Marshall Eriksen and Lily Aldrin- "How I Met Your Mother"
Usually television shows are based on couples that are not together and focus on their journey of getting together. While HIMYM definitely did that, for most fans it was the couple that had been together from the first episode that really captured their hearts. The type of love they had was one of those that normally would make anyone annoyed at how cute they were. But for some reason, they were not annoying but incredibly endearing. There are very few people that do not want what they had.
7. Lorelai Gilmore and Luke Danes- "Gilmore Girls"
If there was ever an example of opposites attract, it was Luke and Lorelai. Due to the fact that they were opposites, they often evened each other out a lot and that is why they worked well together. She was overly energetic and he was stoic, she talked a lot and he used mostly mono syllable, she was optimistic and he definitely was not. They were far from the perfect couple and spent more time apart than they did together but the fact that they were each other's person was never in question. Their relationship also made people realize that sometimes love is right there the whole time, you just have to be ready to accept it.
8. Kurt Hummel and Blaine Anderson- "Glee"
For a couple that was actually only meant to be friends, they became one of this biggest couples in not only the show but in recent pop culture. Another example of high school sweethearts, their struggles were almost constant. They faced violence, depression, long distance relationships and the battle to maintain their relationship and themselves individually. In the end though, they showed us that there is no time like the present and that if you want something to go after it.
9. Cory Matthews and Topanga Lawrence- "Boy Meets World"/"Girl Meets World"
For nineties babies, they were the epitome of couples. We grew up with Cory and Topanga, watching as they went from best friends to dating to married and now we get to see them as parents. They have literally done everything together and watching them do it will never get old. Not only did they do all of this, but they did it while supporting each other and obtaining their dreams. Most kids wished they could have had relationships like theirs.
10. Lucy and Ricky Ricardo- "I Love Lucy"
No couples list will ever be complete without the addition of the best television couple of all time. Of course, Lucy and Ricky are not exactly the model of an ideal couple based on today's standards but it is hard to deny that they are a staple couple. Like every other couple, they had their problems and they were definitely opposites but they made it work. They just made it work based on what worked in their time. For their time, they were without a doubt, couple goals.
