Cookies are a blessing to us all. They're soft, sweet, chewy, and overall insanely delicious. Baking cookies isn't rocket science, but sometimes we could all use a few tips to perfect our finished product. Check out these 10 tips to making amazing cookies.
1. Use the correct type of butter
Most recipes will specify unsalted or salted and it's for good reasons! Follow the recipe, your butter type makes a world of difference.
2. Always use softened butter
Never use frozen or melted butter, it will give your dough a strange consistency and won't mix well with the other ingredients. Make sure to let your butter sit out and reach room temperature before adding it into your mixture.
3. A little extra vanilla never hurt anybody
I always add a little extra vanilla than the recipe calls for. You might not be able to taste it, but it always tastes better to me!
4. Use less sugar for fluffier cookies
High amounts of sugar can make flat and crispy cookies. Brown sugar makes for chewier cookies. White, granulated sugar often causes cookies to dry out more.
5. Chill the dough
This doesn't always work, but often times, putting the dough in the refrigerator for a couple hours or overnight lets the ingredients morph together. It allows everything to set and also makes shaping dough balls much easier!
6. Use parchment paper
If you run out of cooking spray or find a recipe that tends to stick to your baking sheets, trying placing parchment paper down to keep dough from bonding to the pan.
7. Make your dough balls taller rather than round
Rather than rolling the dough into perfect spheres, pinch the balls so that they stand up taller. This will prevent your cookies from falling flat while baking. Instead, the dough will fall gently and create fluffier cookies!
8. Take cookies out of the oven before they start browning
If a batch has been in the oven close to the suggested time but still looks underdone, take them out. They look different under oven lights and will continue to cook through for a bit after being taken out of the oven. Odds are, underdone-looking cookies will turn out to be just right!
9. Allow cookies to cool completely
Use at least 2 different pans when baking batches of cookies. That way, you can have one pan in the oven while cooling another. Keep cookies on the pan until they are cooked and cooled all the way through to prevent them from falling apart.
10. Store baked cookies with bread
Putting a slice or two of bread in your container of baked cookies will keep them fresh and moist. It will prevent them from drying out and will allow you to store cookies longer.
