2016 is here and you're still trying to figure what happened in 2015. Your GPA was too low, you still haven't worked up the nerve to talk to your crush, and that diet was definitely harder than you thought it would be. Well, fear not, Camels! 2016 is full of untapped potential. Here are some tips on how to have the best semester (or year) yet!
1. Be patient with yourself.
Too often, you are your hardest critic. Give yourself a chance to understand what went wrong and then try to find ways to improve. Sometimes, you need a break from yourself.
2. Sing in the Shower.
People don't usually belt out tunes in public. They are way more inclined to sing when showering. Doing this releases a fun little neurotransmitter called dopamine, this little guy can help put you in a good mood. Try showering in the morning to kick start your day. Other benefits can be seen here.
3. Make a List.
List making helps you to prioritize your goals, duties, and important events. They can also help by turning that mountain you're stressing over into a molehill. By looking at your life objectively, things you once considered a big deal become small and manageable.
4. Set aside a day every week just for you!
This may not seem significant, but trust me, sometimes you need a day to just sit around and catch up on "House of Cards." Giving yourself a day to just be yourself is priceless.
5. Don't be afraid to say "No".
Don't feel obligated to do something you genuinely don't want to do. Some people like going to the movies. Others prefer going to the batting cages. If you're not up for meeting your friend at Panera, suggest something else or be honest. Don't forget to take your own feelings into account when making decisions. Everything in moderation.
6. Don't be afraid to say "Yes".
Learning how to use the word "no" is just as important as learning how to say "yes". If you really want to go to that art exhibit, go. Don't deny yourself a trip to the exhibit because you have to go alone. Try new things and don't be afraid to get outside your comfort zone.
7. Be more kind.
Sometimes, we forget to be nice to one another. Try your best to be kind to everyone. You never know what someone else is going through or how your actions may affect them. Being a good person should come naturally, but sometimes we fail. Practicing compassion on a daily basis is a good place to start.
8. Breathe.
Another thing we forget to do is breathe. We forget to take a moment and appreciate life and each other. It only takes a moment to stop and reflect. Do it more often. It can do you a world of good. It lowers anxiety, helps lower blood pressure, and much more.
9. Take a walk or a drive.
Depression is all too common in our society. Something as simple as going for a walk can help reduce the risk of becoming depressed. Going for a drive may not be as physically healthy, but it can help clear your mind like a walk can. Drive or walk to somewhere that relaxes you.
10. Get philanthropic.
Got a little free time? Do something rewarding such volunteering. Find a cause that you are passionate. Animal shelters, hospices, schools, and the like need your help. Use your talents for good and help however you can. You can be a positive force for change. Let this year be your best year.
Bonus Tip: If you ever feel small, remember this: there maybe 7.4 billion people in the world, but only takes one to make a difference. You are important.
