1. Restaurants.
There is nothing more sad than seeing families ignoring each other when they're out to eat because they're all on the phone. Not only is it rude to the people you're spending time with, it's also rude to the people working at the restaurant. They shouldn't have to fight for your attention when you're the one who came to their restaurant.
2. Driving.
This isn't a lecture, but texting and driving is illegal in Wisconsin and the fine for first-time offenders can be up to to $400. And if that's not enough to convince you, using the phone while driving is seriously dangerous: the Department of Transportation estimates that cell phones are involved in 1.6 million automobile-related accidents annually, resulting in 6,000 deaths each year.
3. Crossing the street.
We've all done this one and then rolled our eyes when someone else does it and bumps into us.
4. The bathroom.
I'm not judging...but I totally am. At least turn off your keyboard clicks so we can't all hear you.
5. Dates.
You aren't going to impress anyone by ignoring them while they're trying to engage you in a conversation.
6. Concerts.
Live in the moment! Just enjoy the music, the people and the atmosphere. Many bands have even started asking people to put their phones away during concerts since they really do take away from the experience.
7. In class.
You might not be distracted by your phone, but other people are. How am I supposed to pay attention to the themes of excess and consumerism in Don DeLillo's "White Noise" when you're about to snag some jelly shoes from ASOS for $20?
8. Movie theaters.
Turn off your phone to avoid getting a call from the infamous "Annoying Person."
9. Before bed.
While it's tempting to catch up on social media and the news before bed, studies have shown that the blue light emitted from your smartphone makes it harder to fall asleep and stay asleep. So instead of scrolling through Instagram and Facebook, try reading a book to relax. I promise you will wake up feeling happier and more rested.
10. In nature.
I understand the need for a perfect #natureselfie, but you'll be amazed how much more you can appreciate the beauty around you when you're not distracted by your phone.
