  1. Are the singers lip-syncing or...?
There were so many musical artists and theatrical performers in the parade, but how many of them are really singing? I always look really closely at the performers to find the slightest delay between the sound and mouth. Then I laugh in triumph when I find incongruities.
  2. I wonder how long it took to make those balloons…
Those things are massive! It really made me wonder how long it took to design, construct and then inflate all of those balloons. There are so many balloons in the parade and that it is all I can think when I look at them.
  3. Wow, those people look so cold.
It's usually pretty chilly in NYC at this time of year; each person at the parade is bundled up. Some of the costumes that the dancers and cheerleaders wear are so little; they must have been absolutely freezing. I hope they got access to jackets after the parade.
  4. I forgot how much I loved (insert favorite childhood character here).
I had forgotten how much I enjoyed watching SpongeBob and the Charlie Brown specials on TV when I was a kid. What I love about the parade is that they mix some of the original balloon designs with new ones. The styles have changed over the years but each time I see them I'm amazed.
  5. I miss marching band.
I was in my high school marching band and on the flag line, so each time I see a band in the parade I get super emotional and excited. I miss it all the time and seeing them march in the parade makes me miss it that much more. I also get super critical of them. Someone drops a flag or gets out of step and I catch it every time. If you’ve ever been in a marching band, you know exactly what I am talking about.
  6. How much longer is the parade?
Especially if you start watching the parade at 9 a.m., it seems like the whole thing lasts forever. There is no end. All of the groups and shows are great to watch, but there are just so many of them.
  7. I’m hungry.
Ever notice how the longer you watch the parade, the hungrier you get? Maybe the parade was designed for you to get hungrier and hungrier for Thanksgiving dinner. The long, long parade makes you wait for the food so that you can eat as much of it as you want (in order to slip into a food coma) later on.
  8. I could totally hold that balloon and smile -- why am I not in the parade?
It looks so easy, doesn’t it? Just walking, smiling, waving and holding onto the balloon’s rope. So how come I’m not doing it? Oh, yeah...I sleep in every day and value Thanksgiving food a little too much. So long for that dream.
  9. Why is that elf so cute but so creepy?
That elf flies in and you can't help but think about how close Christmas is. Also, do his eyes always follow you wherever you go? How have I never noticed that before?
  10. SANTA IS HERE!
Santa always ends the parade and that means that I could finally immerse myself in everything Christmas. By this point, it is now acceptable to listen to Christmas music and pull out the decorations.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
