We've all been there. Fast food jobs. They're easy to acquire and simple to get the hang of. When we've been working there for what feels like centuries, we usually come up with some pointers for the newbies that we come across. At that point we're critiquing every little thing they do, and I'm here to give you new employees some career-saving tips.
1. Don't stand around.
If you don't know what to do, ask someone in a higher position. There's always something to be done. Simple as that.
2. Try to go as fast as you can.
It's called fast food for a reason. Most places have some sort of drive-thru timer. These reflect on how well your store and your crew does. Motivate the rest of your bunch to keep times low.
3. Don't act miserable.
It's a job. You're there to work. To get paid. Act like you want it, and have customers leave with a smile on their face. It's all about guest satisfaction.
4. Please learn the menu.
I can't even tell you how many times I've seen someone at the register tell a customer that we didn't have a particular food, drink, etc. That is embarrassing to the company, the crew, and the customers. Also, ask employees questions, especially if where you work has a 'secret menu.'
5. Keep your personal life and drama out of work.
Again, it is a job. You aren't getting paid to talk about your date last night. Don't talk about other employees. Definitely do not talk about customers. And... keep any kind of inappropriate talk out of there too. Should I have to mention that?
6. Take initiative.
If there's a mess on the floor and you are the only one that's not busy, don't wait for someone to tell you to clean it up or say to yourself, "Well, I didn't make it so it's not my problem." Just clean it up. Plus, doing things like that prove to your boss that you are worthy to move up to a higher position or get a raise.
7. Don't be sloppy.
If you have to make a sandwich, make it correctly. Don't risk the customer bringing it back and being unhappy. Quality is just as important as speed.
8. Get there more than five minutes before your shift.
It looks unprofessional to be clocking in last minute. A lot of managers don't like it when their workers are running and punching in when they aren't even ready to work.
9. The customer is always right.
Ah, the famous phrase. Never, ever, argue with anyone behind the counter. Always respect them and keep a smile on your face. If you don't think you can handle them, pull another employee over to get a hold on the situation.
10. Everything has a process.
Don't get frustrated if you're not the best yet. It all takes time, so hang in there.
