I know I have reached those times in the summer where I complain how there is nothing to do. It can be easy to forget that there are actually wonderful things around us at our disposal. While it might seem boring at times, Kansas City offers some great adventures. Here are 10 things to do this summer:

1. First Fridays and First Weekends

Every weekend, there is an event that many people don't know about. On the first Friday of every month, the Crossroads hosts open art galleries for people to wander the streets and stumble into. There are always food trucks and street performers that join the party, and there is also a lot of wine to taste. Every first weekend of the month, the West Bottoms opens its buildings and has thousands of antiques available to purchase. First Fridays and First Weekends is always one of my favorite things to do in KC.

2. The City Market

This place is also one of my favorite spots in KC. Even if you don't buy any of the awesome produce, it's still fun to walk around and look at what people have to offer. Saturday mornings seem to be the busiest, but it's always nice to walk around this area. I do recommend buying some fruit, though.

3. Geocaching

I always thought this hobby faded away, but it is still alive and well. I've heard that are plenty of geocaches to find hidden around KC, so this could easily be a fun-filled day exploring the city and beyond. Just look up the website and start the hunt!

4. Escape Room

This has become a very popular activity for many people, and KC has plenty of rooms to choose from. There are some downtown, and even some in the suburbs, like Lee's Summit. I have yet to try any in KC, but it's on my list. Who wouldn't want to be locked in your room and have to figure out how to escape with your friends?

5. Hot Country Nights

If you're a fan of country music, Q104 hosts Hot Country Nights, a concert series at the Power and Light District downtown. The shows are every Thursday, and they are free. The shows are all ages, but anyone under 21 has to be accompanied. Not a bad way to spend a summer night.

6. Royals

Of course I have to mention my boys in blue, because they're always playing. There are also plenty of fun summer games, like T-Shirt Tuesdays, or Buck Night. Also, don't forget that every Friday in the summer is Fireworks Friday.

7. Powell Gardens

For a day that's not too hot, there is always Powell Gardens, which has been one of my favorite places since I was a kid. The flowers are pretty to look out, and it seems that there is always something to explore. This summer, the dinosaurs are back in their Jurassic Garden.

8. Ethnic Enrichment Festival

This August 19-21, the 37th Annual Ethnic Enrichment Festival will take place in Swope Park. There are different shows, dances, and food from many countries. If you want to learn more about different countries and cultures, this is the place to go this summer.

9. Shakespeare in the Park

If you're a fan of the theater, you should check out Shakespeare in the Park. This year, the group is performing Twelfth Night. It takes place at Southmoreland Park from June 14-July 3 at 8:00 P.M. Admission is donation only, and it's always fun to enjoy the outdoors while watching a play.

10. Sporting KC

The other team to watch this summer is Sporting KC. I've never been to one of the games while they've been named Sporting, but I heard they are a blast. I am adding it to my list of things to do this summer, and so should you.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
