Summer for most of us, and hopefully everyone, soon is approaching. With time off from school, I'm sure many of you are either working, volunteering or enjoying being home. Also, you may not want to just work or sit at home all day, but to enjoy leisure time with friends and family. Below are 10 ways you can do just that, but at the same time save what is not abundant in every college kid's wallet... money.
1. Hike
This can depend on where you live, but especially if you live in the mountains, this is a great activity that could literally be done in your backyard, at a local park, state parks or community hiking trails in your surrounding area. It's a great way to be active, get outside and spend time with family and friends.
2. Visit A Free Museum or Zoo
Some cities and colleges offer free educational attractions. If by chance this is not available in your area, some museums, art galleries, zoos or science centers may offer occasional free admission during special events or may have a "free day."
3. Have A Yard Sale
While this may require a little work, you won't have to spend money, but it's a quick and easy way to make money. Depending on the amount you have to sell and what is bought what you can make will vary. However, it's a way to get rid of unwanted items, and as college kids, every penny helps.
4. Go Swimming
Most towns or cities have a community swimming pool. Usually, this is an activity that can be done for free. Swimming can be relaxing and is also a low impact exercise for those who need it. Grab a friend, have a swimming race or even grab your swimming noodle if you prefer and have a day at the pool.
5. Find A New Hobby
Whether it be cooking, writing, playing a new instrument or trying a new sport, a hobby is a productive way to invest your time. You can discover a new skill you previously would have not tapped into or find out another interest you may have. Also, it can be a creative outlet that aids in boosting your mood and self confidence.
6. Pick Up A Book
Complaining about not having time anymore to read? Well, now's your chance. Before school starts back up again and you're stuck reading textbooks, take time to read something for leisure. Whether it be fiction, nonfiction, mystery, romance or whatever it may be, reading can be a way to relax your mind and keep it sharp for the school year ahead.
7. Binge-Watch
Many of us are guilty of the widely-known trend "binge-watching." With summer around the corner, treat yourself. After a hard year's work of college, binge-watching should definitely be on your to-do list. Also, assuming you have a Netflix account or a friend with a Netflix account, you can spend hours catching up on your favorite TV show or can find a new one together.
8. Go On A Bike Ride
Whether it be in your neighborhood, down on a road, trail or the beach, going on a bike ride solo or with friends can be a fun and free activity. Making your own breeze on a hot summer's day and getting in a good workout at the same time? A bike ride is sure to be a win-win.
9. Make Your Own Art
Living in a world full of DIYs may seem cliché, but why not take advantage of them? Use the internet and find inspiration through Pinterest, YouTube or other outlets. See what you have around the house and make something out of it. It doesn't have to be Picasso-worthy by any means, but can be a unique way to make your own art and may even be an extra way to decorate your room.
10. Have A Cook-Out
Having a cook out is a fun way to bring together friends and family. Plus, who doesn't like a good burger? While this may not be 100 percent free, you can cut down on costs by asking different friends to bring certain food items like drinks, chips or desserts.
Overall, spend your time (and money) wisely and make the most of your summer. While it may be just beginning now, it will be over before you know it.
