With this past week, many of us have gone through a rollercoaster of emotions. Here are some things you can do to help yourself and actually "make America great again."
1. Take every opportunity to say "I love you" and "I appreciate you."
This election has done more than just affect politics in this country. It has destroyed friendships, evoked fear, and forcibly divided people of every social/economic/cultural background. In these trying times, we need to remember the ones we love and acknowledge what they do for us on a daily basis. Politics aside, we need to be kind to one another and learn how to live in harmony.
2. Make a list of things you are thankful for.
This is something so simple that can make us appreciate all that we have. Even on the worst days, there is always something to be thankful for.
3. Perform random acts of kindness
When you perform these tasks, do not expect external rewards. But you can expect a feeling of internal gratification for doing something nice and unexpected for someone else.
4. Aim to learn one new thing a day.
Sites such as Youtube an TED are great and free resources to learn quick tips. Whether you are looking to learn how to back a pie or learn how to break the glass ceiling there is a video for you.
5. Have a conversation with someone who has a different perspective than you
The only way we can expect to understand one another is to share our experiences. If we never push ourselves outside our own mental model then we cannot broaden our own perspective. We need to practice our active listening skills and have conversations where we can exercise empathy.
6. Volunteer
Another way to get out of our comfort zone is to make a difference. There are so many opportunities to volunteer at the local level to help others. We will not only benefit others, but benefit ourselves.
7. Doing a social media cleanse.
As impossible as it is, Facebook, Twitter, and other social media platforms are only continuing to perpetuate the stores in the media that divide us. Social media is supposed to help us share stories and connect with one another but lately it is separating us. Take a couple days and leave social media and comeback to see what role it should play in your life.
8. Watch Kid President.
He is honestly amazing; just do it.
9. Know what's going on in your local government.
Yes, the election is over. But so many people forget that elections happen every two years in America. Local politics can actually effect the average American more than the general election. So get out and vote for your city council members and state governors; they are the people that truly help the place you call home.
10. Be yourself
Instead of parroting back opinions of others, devolop your own opinion. Share your experience because it is unique and valuable.
