10 Things I Want My Little Brother To Know

I love you even when I may not like you.

10 Things I Want My Little Brother To Know
Quinn O'Donnell

Being a little brother is not the easiest task, especially with a sister like me. I yell at you, fight with you and get annoyed by you a lot. But I also love you, help you and teach you a lot as well. I wouldn't trade you for anything in the world (even though I always said I would have rather had mom bring home a pet instead of you). But below are a list of things I feel like you should know. They are things that I have learned along the way, or things that I may not tell you very often.

1. Find a solid friend group.

Find a group of people that are there whenever you need them. This can be whenever you want to grab food, watch a basketball game or need people to talk to. Having a solid group of friends makes life a whole lot easier.

2. Study a lot but have fun as well.

Studying is important. It will help you get good grades and get into college. It will make you a successful person. But school is not everything. Make time to hang out with people, watch TV, and live your life.

3. I am here whenever you need me.

I am here for you. This can be when you need a ride from a party or when you need someone to talk to when you are stressed out about something. I am here for you whenever and no matter what. My door is always open.

4. Challenge yourself.

Do things outside of your comfort zone. Do things you normally would not do. Join a new club or go skydiving. Just do something that makes you feel alive.

5. I love the time we spend together.

The insignificant little things we do together mean a lot to me. Whether it's going out for pizza, coming with me to run an errand or just sitting in my room talking to me, it is important to me. It allows me to find out what is going on in your life.

6. Stand up for yourself.

Don't take crap from anybody. Stand up for yourself and what you believe in. Some people may not like you for this. But trust me, you will find people who will.

7. Make mistakes.

You may think mistakes are the end of the world. Well, they are not. Mistakes help you learn. If you didn't make them, you wouldn't learn anything new. You may think the 75 you got on an exam is the worst thing to ever happen to you. But that bad grade just tells you to study harder the next time.

8. Be yourself.

Don't try to be someone else to please others. You will find people who like you just the way you are.

9. Everything will be OK.

You may be having a bad day, a bad week or a bad month, but eventually everything will get better. You will be OK. I am always here for you if you want to talk.

10. I love you.

I will always love you, even when I may not particularly like you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
