As I finish out my freshman year of college, I thought that I should compile a list of things that all incoming freshmen should know. Hopefully, when you read this, that it will help you out in some way.
1. Don't Wear Your Lanyard Around Your Neck
This is the #1 target that makes you look like a Freshman. It's not cool at all.
Unless you are Dylan O'Brien, then it's okay.
2. Be Involved
Getting involved with on campus clubs, helps you create friendships and connections with the faculty. It also helps you meet people outside of your dorm. It keeps from sitting in your room and watching Netflix all day.
3. Step Outside the Box
Don't be afraid to try something new or challenge your comfort zone. Try a different club, take a class that sounds interesting, and if you kind of want to try something, just go for it! College is all about self-discovery and stepping out of your comfort zone is a great way to do this.
4. Be Yourself
Stay true to who you are and don't change for other people. Change is good but only if you want to. Never let someone tell you who to be.
5. Find Your Core Group of Friends
They say the friends you make in college are the friendships that last a lifetime. Find people who accept you for who you are. These friends will be your support system, shoulder to cry on, and the people you binge watch Netflix with.
6. Use Your Meal Plan
You pay tons of money for it so use it! All universities have different policies in regrades to meal plans, so choose wisely.
7. The Freshmen 15 is REAL
When you start college, you think that you will stay active and healthy, but the doesn't happen. Stress often leads to unhealthy habits that can impact your body in a negative way. Be careful with you eating and sleeping habits. Try to make it to the gym once in awhile.
8. Stay In Touch
Whether it be with your family or old friends, having people at home to support you or talk to is important. It's to have someone who is always on your side. So don't just call your parents for money actually talk to them because they miss you and you secretly miss them too.
9. NAPPING
Everyone loves naps, especially in college. Naps become your best friend.
10. Make Time For Yourself
It's good to be active on campus but always remember to save time for yourself. Whether it be watching a movie, going for a walk, or listening music having time away from others and school gives your brain sometime to rest. Caring for yourself is important for mental health; it gives you space to breathe.
