I have mixed feelings on working retail. Retail is really great for people who want to pick up a few hours for some extra cash, or get out of the house and do something. However, it's not all that it's cracked up to be. Despite what people think, retail is hard work. No one ever said it was going to be easy. Everyone thinks it's the simplest of jobs. No; not the case. You have to deal with a lot when you work retail. Sometimes I don't know what's worse: having to stand on your feet all day for 9-hour shifts or dealing with the customers that come into the store. Here is my list of 15 things that really tick me off about working retail.
1. The infamous "Do you work here?" question.
No, I just wear a bright pink lanyard with my name tag on it everyday. I come to the store to fold crop tops for endless fun.
2. Standing on your feet for 9-hour shifts.
This is the worst. I practically have cankles by the time I leave work because my legs are so swollen from standing so much. No matter how long you work retail, you will never get used to the aching legs and feet.
3. Hearing "It's so expensive!"
Um, I'm sorry but you don't need to complain to me. I don't make up these prices.
4. "Can I give you $100?"
Of course. Pay your $1.08 candy and $4.60 crop top with $100. Don't be surprised if my drawer doesn't even have your change.
5. Better yet, dealing with a customer that pays for $100 worth of clothes with 100-$1 bills.
Now, I have to sit here counting 100-$1 bills to make sure it's all here.
6. Trashed fitting rooms.
Having to deal with customers in the fitting room is terrible. They try on 300 things, leave with nothing, and their fitting room looks like Mount Everest of inside-out jeans and crumpled dresses.
7. Shipment.
20 boxes of new shipment. All processed correctly in a limited time frame.. Is two hours really enough time to unpack, sensor, fold/hang, put out, and back-stock 2o boxes? Absolutely not.
8. "Oh, you close in 2 minutes? I just want to look around."
Awesome! Sure, take your time so I'm here until midnight.
9. Customers that mess up your freshly folded perfectly organized t-shirt pile.
I would love to get you a size if you responded to me but instead, you picked to look at every shirt and walk away, leaving the pile a big fat mess.
10. "Do you have a garbage?"
Can't you throw your grande iced coffee in someone else's trash? It makes our small trash can smell funky.
11. "But it was in the sale section. It MUST be on sale."
First of all, someone probably stashed it there because they didn't want it anymore. Second of all, no. It isn't on sale. Third of all, please don't argue with me again about it.
12. Rude. people.
It is my job to talk to people and provide assistance. Being rude back to me is not necessary.
13. Staying hours after your shift ends.
Who wants to stay at work longer..?
14. Dealing with customers that think I need to wait on them hand and foot
I am doing my job. I am not your personal maid. Being a personal maid is not in my job description.
15. Lastly, trying to be fake happy on my shift.
How can I be so happy when I have to deal with so much?
