7 Things I Hate Hearing As A Cashier

You'd be surprised what some people say.

Don't get me wrong, being a cashier can be a fun job. You get to socialize with customers all day, you get to work on what is (hopefully) a great team of coworkers, and you get to be a part of a great company. I must say though, I have heard some of the most RIDICULOUS things while working at my cash register. Sometimes customers just say things that make you go, "Are you listening to what you're saying right now?" I really just don't get it. Whether it's a rude comment about the merchandise/pricing/store or a really simple question that they could answer for themselves if they just took a second to think, the things customers say never fail to blow my mind.

I have compiled a list of some of the more common things that I hear during a shift working as a cashier, along with the overly sarcastic response I usually say to myself in my head.

1.) Customer sees no price tag anywhere on an item..."Oh! It must be free!"

No sir, that is not how that works. It just turns out that you picked the one item without a bar-code so now I'll have to send out a search party to figure out where the item is located and how much it costs. This joke might seem funny the first time you hear it, but I'm going on the seventh hour of my shift and I don't find that very comical.

2.) While signing their name on the credit card machine..."When I'm done, do I press clear or OK?"

I kid you not, I hear this at LEAST twice during a shift. Really? Did you hear what you just said? Oh yes, after you're done signing you should totally hit clear because then you'll get to sign all over again, how exhilarating!

3.) Sees I have no one in line at my register..."I figured I would come to your line, you looked bored! Ha ha!"

WELL I WASN'T. I was enjoying some peace and quiet for two seconds. Of course as a cashier this cannot be your reaction. You get to just laugh at the joke and tell them how bored you were with no work to do and are really excited that they chose to come through your line.

4.) Decides they want to get another item from the store..."I'm just going to leave my cart here while I grab something, I'll be right back."

Based on my four years of experience, it seems as though this only ever happens on crazy busy days when your line is a mile long. Am I supposed to just let them leave all of their things right there? Oh yeah ma'am, that's absolutely fine. Please go continue your shopping! I'll leave all of your items right here in the way so that all of the customers behind you have to wait for you to finish, I'm sure they weren't expecting to cash out anytime soon.

5.) Pulls out a coupon clearly from a different store..."I can use this here, right?"

Excuse me ma'am. Does that look like our coupon? Do you know how coupons work? If we honored just any coupon you wanted to use, we could go broke. And also, I'm not going to make an exception for you because then two things will happen. First off, my boss will probably get upset with me for even trying to apply said coupon. Secondly, if bend the rules for you, then out of principle I'll have to bend the rules for everyone. So to answer your question, no you cannot use that coupon here.

6.) Politely asks the customer how they are doing..."Oh I'm doing so terrible. Today, at work my boss blah blah blah blah."

To all of the customers of the world: If a cashier asks how you are doing, chances are they are asking just to be polite and friendly. I don't really want you to unload your entire day's worth of problems on me. I can promise you that I do not get paid enough to listen to every single customer's issues. As much as I feel bad that you're having a terrible day, my main goal here is to cash you out, so let's stay focused on that.

7.) Tells customer their grand total..."That is so ridiculous. Everything here is overpriced. You guys are charging way too much for *insert random item* it's terrible."

Please go on. Please continue to give me crap for prices I don't set. Do you think I, as a measly cashier, go around pricing the store myself? I absolutely do not. Do I agree with you that some of the things in this store are overpriced? Possibly. Do you think that by complaining I am going to magically wave my wand and lower the prices for you? Of course not. I don't set the prices, I just know them. Please take that issue to the people who are actually the ones setting the prices, thanks.

Customers can be the loveliest people. Of course, this list that I just gave doesn't really reflect that. Most of my time working as a cashier is pleasant and I get to encounter a lot of very sweet customers. Every once and awhile though, there's that one person who thinks it's necessary to say any of those seven things. Maybe next time you go to the store, make sure you aren't one of those customers who drivers cashiers insane. We're just trying to do our job, so try your best to be the greatest customer you can be.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
