Going to college is often hallmarked as one of the highlights of a person’s life. But the literal act of getting there is challenging, to say the least. Packing for college is literally one of the most daunting tasks that I have faced thus far. Even packing for nine months in Italy was not as hard as packing for college!
So what makes packing for college so hard? It’s the fact that you literally need to stuff your life in the back of a car and hope that it fits in a room that you've never even seen before. In my case, this year this was even more difficult because not only did I have to pack for my room but I also had to pack for my kitchen, bathroom, etc. The days leading up to move in date are stressful. I literally put off packing until the very end. I had nightmares almost every night about forgetting something important like my medicine, retainer, or adorable heels.
This article is for anyone attempting to pack. The following are 10 things to bring to campus that my make your packing life a little easier.
1. Towel Dress
These things are life savers for anyone in a communal bathroom situation or even in a busy townhouse. These fancy things are not only pretty but they have Velcro at the top so you don’t have to worry about your toe slipping off in the middle of the hallway.
2. Drawer Organizers
These things are lifesavers!! Keep your t-shirts, bras, and underwear organized and neat so you never have to wonder where things are.
3. Mattress topper
College mattresses tend to be really thin and uncomfortable. Make your bed a little squishy with a nice memory foam mattress topper. These can be found at numerous local retailers like Target or Walmart as well as other online retailers like Amazon.
4. Extra sheets
Seriously, this is a godsend when it is hot and sweaty or you've been sick for a week and want to wash your sheets. You immediately have a new set to replace them.
5. Hanging organizer
You can hang it in your closet and store anything from shoes, purses, sweaters, jeans etc. It really frees up closet space, which, as you will soon find out, is a hot commodity in college.
6. Surge protector
Surge protectors are great because they protect your appliances and also give you more outlets. Plus, they are RA approved.
7. Under bed storage bins
These are a necessity! You can put all of your heavier clothing items or miscellaneous objects in them.
8. Shower Caddy
This thing is great for lugging your shampoo, face wash, and more down the hall to the bathroom.
9. Fans
Not all dorms are as nice as mine, and most don’t have air conditioning. It is going to be hot those first couple of weeks, so be prepared.
10. Decorations
Dorms are kind of like hospitals-- bring decorations to make it feel more home-y!
