In high school, there is nothing more exciting than the idea of venturing off to college and never looking back. The raging parties, sleeping until 2 every day, and, of course, making a new group of friends is just what you need. What's interesting about college is that no one ever mentions the practical side of erasing your identity and being completely alone in a new place. It's time to kiss home-cooked meals and any ounce of stability in your life goodbye.
The adjustment period for me was not as smooth as I had anticipated, mostly because I had only prepared myself for the party scene. When I arrived at school, I suddenly became aware that life was about to be different, way different.
Here’s a list of realistic elements of college that you wish someone warned you about before the adjustment period.
1. Freshman dorms are NOT air conditioned, and having 10 running fans will NOT help anything.
Get used to sleeping in a room that is 90 degrees at all times until October
2. Sometimes eating alone at the dining hall is just inevitable.
Although at first, eating at the dining hall alone is nothing short of humiliating, you will quickly realize that food is more important than waiting for friends (and there are tables behind poles where no one can see you).
3. There is NOT always a Dunkin' Donuts within walking distance.
As an avid Dunkin' Donuts addict, realizing there was no Dunkin' Donuts close by was heart wrenching. Starbucks will drain your wallet, and still doesn't even compare to Dunk's caramel swirl iced coffee.
4. Showers are not equipped for shaving, so bring a LOT of Band Aids.
There's nothing like walking down the hallway leaving a trace of blood because you cut yourself trying to contort into a comfortable position to shave your legs.
5. Never go in the first bathroom stall on a Sunday morning.
Unless you're a fan of throw up from last night.
6. Always remember your key when you go take a shower.
Bumping into a tour of eager high school seniors and parents in your towel can be slightly embarrassing.
7. You will be broke, like all the time.
The cost of cabs, food, and Rite Aid's prices can add up very quickly.
8. Professors WILL swear at you when you are least expecting it.
Believe it or not, professors actually treat their students like adults and don't make you ask to go to the bathroom.
9. Dining hall food takes at least two weeks to adjust to.
Be ready to run to the bathroom after eating any dining hall product.
10. It gets better after the first month.
No matter how difficult the transition seems during the first 2 weeks, it's important to remember that everyone loves college for a reason.
