Sure, seating people seems easy but there's a lot you don't understand unless you have been a hostess or a host.
1. No we can't seat your party of 10 in 5 minutes if we’re slammed
You gotta give us a little time to bus the tables, push them together, and warn your server. If you want the dining experience you came for, patience is key.
2. Asking for a booth instead of a table when it’s busy makes us stress
Servers have different sections and they will kill us if we triple or even double seat them especially while busy. Asking us for a booth when all booths are filled is going to make both you and I unhappy.
3. Please don’t yell at us when the wait time is too long for you, it’s not our fault we promise
We are waiting on our other guests to finish their meals, our bussers to clean, and our servers to cash out their previous tables. Sometimes this process takes a lot longer than we all intended it to, so please be patient with us! There is no need to be angry!
4. Don't seat yourself because there is a certain method we use
You will be promptly kicked out of the spot you claimed yourself if you do this. Let us do all the work and seat you at a table! We know exactly what we're doing.
5. When you tell us we’re doing a good job during a rush you'll probably make us cry (happy tears)
During rushes, most hosts and hostesses are busy running around finding empty tables for our guests and seating others. This doesn't sound hard, but the mass of people breathing down our necks to be seated immediately is enough to make us go crazy. So go ahead and tell us we're going great. It'll make our night that much better. Believe me.
6. We are under-appreciated
As a host or a hostess, most servers and other workers don't think we do all that much, but we know the restaurant would be a complete and total disaster without us.
7. Engaging in conversation with us will make us happy
If we ask you how your day has been, it would be nice to hear something more than just a "good" or a "fine". Being stuck at the front desk for five hours with the same people gets to be a little boring. Talk to us about your day. We'll listen.
8. If we don't take reservations, we don't take reservations. Point, blank, period.
It is some restaurants' policy that reservations aren't taken due to the already high volume of people that come into the restaurant. You will just have to put your name on a list like everyone else and wait it out.
9. Don't yell your order at us as soon as we seat you, we aren't servers (yet)
Sure at some small restaurants the hostesses and hosts can get you a drink, but not everything. Just wait a few moments and you'll be taken care of.
10. We do appreciate you
When you are kind to us, you make our shifts bearable. Kindness goes a long way. So be nice and we will definitely remember it.
