10 Best Things About Being Home Over Winter Break

There is nothing during the school year that we seem to look forward to more than winter break. Sure, we get Thanksgiving and maybe some other long weekends off, but they are short lived and are not really much of a break, for we are still in the duration of the semester and are expected to catch up on work while they are happening. Winter break, however, concludes the semester; therefore, we have almost a month with absolutely no work to do. It is much needed after a long semester ending with the few dreaded weeks known as finals. Finishing your last final for the semester and getting ready to go home for break is possibly the most satisfying feeling ever, for we know we have a month ahead of us in which we are free to do whatever we want. Here are the best things about being home during the break:

1. Pets.

By now we are probably used to living without our families, but living without our pets for months at a time is torture. Being home means you can catch up on all the cuddle time that you have missed with your fluffy loved ones.

2. Not being picky about clothes (or not wearing any at all).

When we are home, we probably spend most of our time just chilling in the house. Therefore, we don’t need to spend nearly as much time thinking about what we are going to wear. Why even bother getting dressed at all? Pajamas and fuzzy socks equals life.

3. Family time.

No matter how much they annoy us, we can't deny that it’s great to catch up on quality time with our families.

4. FOOD.

We probably did not appreciate it as much before we went to college, but after eating dining hall food, our refrigerators at home seem like heaven. Plus, we can eat home-cooked meals, and go to all of our favorite restaurants from home that we missed.

5. Catching up with old friends.

Sure, we probably miss our friends from school a lot, but it’s awesome to get to catch up with all of our friends from home, and compare our best college stories.

6. Jamming to music.

We can play any music as loud as we want, without worrying about being annoying (except to our siblings, who already think we’re annoying). What’s a better time than to have a dance party to all of our favorite throwback tunes?

7. Everything nostalgic.

It is not until we get home from college that we realize how much we really missed everything from when we were younger. Just going through all of our old books, toys, photos — OK, cue the waterworks!

8. Going on vacation.

Even though the best part about winter break is undoubtedly sitting at home and doing nothing, getting to go on vacation is pretty awesome too — especially if you go somewhere warm!

9. Staying up and going to sleep whenever.

There’s no shame in going to sleep at 5 a.m. every night, or waking up at 3 p.m. We don’t have a schedule to follow, so we can basically live the nocturnal life if we want (just be sure to get back on a regular sleep schedule before going back to school!).

10. Being able to try anything and everything.

Is there a new recipe you wanted to try making? A new movie you wanted to see? A project on which you wanted to embark? Well, there’s honestly no better time to try it all than during the time we are home for break. These three weeks are extremely special, so take advantage of them before they end!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
