10 Things You Experience As A Redhead

Ever since I was little, people have been coming up to me to make a comment on my hair; to put their two cents in and share their hair stories with me. Of course it's nice of them, but frankly, I really don't listen to them half the time. Most of them say the same things -- " you are so lucky to have red hair!"

Some of the comments people say to me are weird but other are just plain obnoxious. Here are 10 all things redheads experience at one point or another:

1. People CONSTANTLY coming up to you.

It's been happening since I was little. People come up to me and ask me where I got my red hair. I would have to explain to them that both my maternal and paternal grandpas had red hair. No my parents do not have red hair. Yes I have other siblings with red hair. I've lost count as to how many times I've been asked these questions.

2. Strangers wanting to touch your hair.

This has also been happening since I was little. People who I have no idea who they are come up, ask the same questions every time and ask to touch my hair. Some people don't even ask. They just caress your hair.

3. People asking you to cut off a piece of your hair.

Yes, you read that correctly. No matter if it's my mother, my extended family, or a complete stranger, everyone wants a piece of my hair.

4. Finding random gray hairs.

I think I found my first gray hair when I was 12 years-old and I started crying to my mom that I was turning into an old lady. I usually find them in the summer when I spend the days in the sun.

5. The struggle of not getting tan in the summer.

During the summer, I spend most of my days laying out soaking up the sun on the beach or poolside and you'd think that would result in getting a nice tan, but I only get freckles and sunburn if I'm not careful enough

6. People telling you how extremely lucky you are.

Yes, I do realize that only 2% of the world has red hair. I have also lost count of how many times people have asked me this question.

7. "Never dye it."

If I had a dollar for every time someone said this to me, I could pay all my tuition and student loans off.

8. "You guys would look cute together."

As much as I love being a redhead, so many of my friends have wanted to pair me up with another redhead and just because I am one does not mean I'd want to date one.

9. The term "ginger" or the joke of having "no soul."

The first time someone called me a ginger I thought it was an insult. It kind of grew on me and I am not phased by it anymore. As for the joke of having "no soul" it's not very funny and after you've heard it after so many times, it gets old. **eye roll**

10. People recognizing you because of your hair.

I have been recognized by multiple people from social media that I meet in real life because of my red hair and every time I don't recognize them. I am truly sorry to those people. It happens all the time with me so if you are one of those that follow my Instagram, Facebook, or Twitter, spot me in real life, and I don't recognize you, do not take offense.

I truly am really grateful that I have red hair and if you are too, please take into account what everyone says to you. Don't take offense to the terms or the jokes, try not to dye it, and also thank everyone that compliments you. We really are lucky and at the end of the day, I am so grateful to be a ginger.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
