Growing up in a household as the youngest of three brothers, I learned my fair share of both the good and bad of being the last born. Whether I was being used as a human punching bag, or thanking my brothers for getting me out of a bad situation, being the youngest of my family made for countless interesting memories. As every family is different in their own dynamic and way of life growing up however, there are still a few things that every youngest child can relate to.
1. No matter how old you and your siblings get, you will forever be the youngest and forever the "baby".
"Mom, you know I am in my 20's and have a name right? No? Okay, 'baby' works too"
2. When your older siblings made you mad, you plotted revenge like you were Liam Neeson trying to get his daughter back.
So what if the petty annoyances we came up with didn't carry out as expected; it's the thought that counts, right?
3. You most likely had to share a bedroom with an older sibling at one point in your life.
"This is my side of the room, that's your side of the room, got it?"
4. You learned when NOT to trust your older siblings
After watching the humor unfold when my oldest brother convinced my middle brother that white Playdough was mashed potatoes, I learned to not be so easily-trusting when it came to food...
5. You also learned when you CAN trust them
"Mom heard you got in trouble at school today, I'd start thinking of a way to get out..."
Thanks for the heads up
6. Your siblings shaped your high school teacher's biased notions of you
"Oh no, I see we have another Rohrlack this year..."
And that is supposed to mean what, exactly?
7. Hand-me-downs weren't just for clothes, but were a way of life growing up.
Clothes were always passed down, but it didn't stop there. Toys when you were young, vehicles when you got your license, their "better" room when they left for college; you name it, they had it first.
8. You weren't sure whether to learn from your older siblings mistakes, or try them on your own to see if you could do them successfully without get caught; after all, everything was a competition, right?
*He got caught sneaking out through the back door, so maybe I wont get caught using the side door*..... *Still gets caught*
Should've learned...
9. No matter how low the bad times in your relationship became, you always realized how much you look up to your older siblings and didn't want to let anything ruin that.
Not even heated fist fights could permanently break a sibling bond; arguments about who got "shotgun" in the car definitely stretched the limits though.
10. No matter what age, you will always look to your older siblings as your best friends and strongest helpers, even if you don't admit it.
Whether it was giving advice on how to get out of trouble, backing you up when tough situations broke out, or simply causing pointless mischief right by your side, your older siblings were there for you, and with you, more that you knew.
