10 Things College Students Take For Granted

We're all gonna miss it when classes finally end.

10 Things College Students Take For Granted

Whether we want to admit it or not, we are all going to miss college -- even if it's just for the summer. We walk around the same campus every day, seeing the same faces with unfamiliar ones, but soon enough, this will come to an end, and the chaos of responsibilities takes over. We don't realize it now, but each day we spend together is a memorable one. These simple things matter:

1. Being surrounded by your friends all the time.

Whether it be with your roommates, suitemates, or a friend down the hall, everyone is so close to you every day. Yeah, sometimes this is overwhelming. But it's so convenient to walk up a flight of stairs or two doors down to spend time with people who make you happy. No more having to get dressed, get in your car, and drive all the way over to a friend's house -- just walk 10 feet, rolling up in a messy bun.

2. Being able to take a nap literally whenever you want

There are no boundaries when it comes to napping. No parents to tell you to “get up and do something with your life.” Wanna sleep at 12, 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 p.m.? Your twin XL bed is calling your name.

3. Getting a little too excited for the free T-shirts/towels/balls at all sporting events

College students love free accessories. Whether it be a corny T-shirt that is one-size-fits-all too big for you, or a graphic tee of your college mascot, it’s free, so we’ll take it. And you bet when campus emails you that the first 50 fans to come to the game get a free ball, we’re leaving an extra 25 minutes early.

4. Making your own schedule

You have the option to schedule your classes however you want. An opportunity like this will never come again! Once you’re in the big world, it's work work work work work work. *cue Rhianna*

5. Living away from home

OK, we all love mom's home-cooked meals, but let's face it: We are out on our own for the first time in our lives. No one to tell you to clean your room, get to sleep, or do your homework. Once you get back home, rules set in. In college, you make your own.

6. Going out on a weeknight

Even though we have a 7:45 a.m. bio lab Thursday morning, it’s still acceptable for me to take this bottle of wine to the face tonight, right? The answer is always "yes" to a college student. It’s even so normal that it becomes a bit concerning if you haven’t drunk on a weeknight.

7. Designing your own room

We are our own interior designers when it comes to our dorm rooms. Managing how to stack the beds, move our dressers around (with no problem) and decorating our walls with trendy tapestries is soooooper cute. Plus, its the only time it is acceptable to have a mini fridge and microwave in your own room.

8. The college comfort food

Yeah, we all complain about it every day because we are so used to it. But once we’re away from the cafeteria’s french fries, quesadillas, cookies, or “chef’s choice,” we start to miss it. Especially being able to order delivery or walk down the street at any time for a late-night pizza.

9. The parties

Yes, the parties don’t stop after college, but they will never be the same. At what other time in your life will you be able to leave one party and walk two doors down to the next one? Never.

10. Making new friends

The friends in college are the ones we keep forever -- so the story goes. You can meet as many new people as you want. The more you friends you make, the more acceptable it is to act like an idiot ... because now, solo idiot days are over.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
